Kayser then incorporates data from a random sample survey, comparing troubled spouses with nondisaffected spouses and exploring the relationships among marital disaffection, psychological well-being, commitment, attribution, and gender. When Love Dies examines the concept of matrimony from broad theories of marriage as a social institution to the most specific nuances of spousal interaction. Kayser shows that by studying the dynamics that produce disaffection, partners are able to focus on ways to better understand what is needed to maintain love in marriage. Identifying the phases of disaffection, including significant turning points, can alert spouses and clinicians that it is time to confront problems of alienation. Clinical recommendations for repairing marriages are offered for each phase of the disaffection process. The book also provides a scale of marital disaffection that is of practical use to clinicians and researchers
Incorporating the most up-to-date literature in sociology, psychoanalysis, psychology, and communication, this book provides an exhaustive synthesis of theoretical, empirical, and clinical research on personal relationships. Prager explores the complex interconnections between intimacy and individual development, examining relationships from intimacy to old age in their social, cultural, and gender contexts, and constructing an innovative, multi-tiered model of intimate relating. The book also delves into the thoughts and emotions people experience when they behave intimately with each other, and asks how intimate relationships come to be satisfying, stable and harmonious for the people involved. This book will be of interest to researchers, educators, students and practitioners who study or treat close relationships. It will also serve as an invaluable text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on personal relationships, intimacy, and family relations.
Countless studies have established the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for many manifestations of depression and anxiety. In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Perinatal Distress, Wenzel and Kleiman discuss the benefits of CBT for pregnant and postpartum women who suffer from emotional distress. The myths of CBT as rigid and intrusive are shattered as the authors describe its flexible application for perinatal women. This text teaches practitioners how to successfully integrate CBT structure and strategy into a supportive approach in working with this population. The examples used in the book will be familiar to postpartum specialists, making this an easily comprehensive and useful resource.
In Foundations of Ethical Practice, Research, and Teaching in Psychology and Counseling, Kitchener and Anderson lay a conceptual foundation for thinking well about ethical problems. Whereas the first edition focused mainly on ethical reasoning and decision making, this new edition draws more explicitly on all components of James Rest's model of moral/ethical behavior, including moral/ethical sensitivity, moral/ethical decision making, moral/ethical motivation, and the ego strength to follow through on the decision. The book addresses five key principles of ethical decision making and includes updated sections on research, teaching and supervision, and practice. It discusses the relationship of the ethical principles and the model of ethical decision-making to professional ethical codes, while offering discussion questions, case scenarios, and activities to help the reader focus on ethical character and virtue. Foundations of Ethical Practice, Research, and Teaching in Psychology and Counseling gives psychologists, students, and trainees the tools they need to analyze their own ethical quandaries and take the right action.

This practical text delineates the basic steps of developing effective interventions for learning and behavior difficulties in children aged two to five. The authors set forth an ecological framework that stresses identifying problem situations rather than classifying individual children as disabled or at risk. The core components of naturalistic intervention design are covered in depth, including teacher and parent interviewing, classroom observation and functional assessment, team-based problem solving, strong accountability methods, and legal and ethical safeguards. Solidly grounded in empirical research, the book presents examples of successful interventions for fostering social competence and language skills and improving interactions with parents, teachers, and peers.
