This study evaluated the available information on the use, occurrence and analysis of PhACs in US water sources. It selected PhACs that are likely to be present at detectable concentrations in municipal wastewater effluent and agricultural runoff then developed simple analytical methods for quantifying these PhACs. With this and the samples attained, preliminary assessment of the ability of wastewater treatment plants, engineered treatment wetlands and soil aquifer treatment systems to remove PhACs was determined and discussed. Since PhACs have been confirmed as present in drinking water sources, additional research is recommended.

This book discusses management of communication disorders in the psychiatry of old age. The contribution of the speech and language therapist is the focus of the book, but this is described within the context of the multidisciplinary team. Language change and language assessment in psychiatric disorders associated with old age, especially dementias, are descbribed in detail. The form of service delivery offered is fundamental to the speech and language therapy intervention that can be offered to this complex and often neglected client group. A management perspective and service delivery in the USA and in the UK are described. Working with carers, service delivery in the community, an innovative scheme involving residential homes, a review of how community care initiatives have affected speech and language therapy services and an analysis of service audit are all included. As well as giving a description of speech and language therapy intervention with the elderly who have psychiatric disorders, the book also highlights the issues and challenges facing clinicians who work within the reformed health service. It should be of considerable interest to speech and language therapists, other health care professionals and students who work with older mentally ill people. Purchasers and managers who are commissioning and providing services for the older population with psychiatric disorders should also find the book useful.
Over the past two decades, rates of adult and childhood obesity in the developed world have risen sharply. By the year 2000, 65% of the United States population were overweight, 30% of these obese. Whilst medical treatment has tended to focus on individual habits of diet and exercise, this approach does little to account for globally increasing levels of obesity, and the external, environmental factors that may be responsible. This in-depth study assembles the evidence for a geographical explanation of current obesity trends, and is the first work to examine the ways in which environment and living conditions promote an imbalance of energy intake over energy expenditure. The book calls upon the expertise of geographers, nutritionists, epidemiologists, sociologists and public health researchers, resulting in a broad, multidisciplinary analysis of this important health issue. This practical text delineates the basic steps of developing effective interventions for learning and behavior difficulties in children aged two to five. The authors set forth an ecological framework that stresses identifying problem situations rather than classifying individual children as disabled or at risk. The core components of naturalistic intervention design are covered in depth, including teacher and parent interviewing, classroom observation and functional assessment, team-based problem solving, strong accountability methods, and legal and ethical safeguards. Solidly grounded in empirical research, the book presents examples of successful interventions for fostering social competence and language skills and improving interactions with parents, teachers, and peers.
