Environmental flows (EF) are an important component of Goal 6 (the ‘water goal’) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yet, many countries still do not have well-defined criteria on how to define EF. In this study, we bring together the International Water Management Institute’s (IWMI’s) expertise and previous research in this area to develop a new methodology to quantify EF at a global scale. EF are developed for grids (0.1 degree spatial resolution) for different levels of health (defined as environmental management classes [EMCs]) of river sections. Additionally, EF have been separated into surface water and groundwater components, which also helps in developing sustainable groundwater abstraction (SGWA) limits. What would you do if someone gravely injured one of your children or grandchildren, intentionally? Unfortunately I have experienced that scenario first-hand and much like it did me the answer may surprise you. On June 19, 1998, my daughter's boyfriend beat and shook my 14-month old granddaughter nearly to death because she would not stop crying. Immaturity and irresponsibility, coupled with an inability to cope with everyday stressors, had caused a grown man to assault a defenseless baby. Fighting for her life she arrived at a local hospital emergency room by ambulance, her diagnosis – Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma (SBS/AHT). Her prognosis awakened a community to a medical term that many had never heard before that evening, and ignited a fire inside of everyone to stop the insanity of Shaken Baby Syndrome. Americans today have been stunned by unprecedented terrorist attacks, escalating wars in the Middle East, and unparalleled financial crisis at home. We are living in a world in which children are no longer safe at school without electronic security and ordinary people are brutally shaking infants when they can no longer cope with the sound of them crying. The time has come for our nation to reassess its priorities and restore basic human values within our communities to protect our most valuable natural resource from senseless and preventable acts of violence. I believe the dividends will be priceless.
