Carceral Space, Prisoners and Animals explores resonances across human and nonhuman carceral geographies. The work proposes an analysis of the carceral from a broader vantage point than has yet been done, developing a ‘trans-species carceral geography’ that includes spaces of nonhuman captivity, confinement, and enclosure alongside that of the human. The linkages across prisoner and animal carcerality that are placed into conversation draw from a number of institutional domains, based on their form, operation, and effect. These include: the prison death row/ execution chamber and the animal slaughterhouse; sites of laboratory testing of pharmaceutical and other products on incarcerated humans and captive animals; sites of exploited prisoner and animal labor; and the prison solitary confinement cell and the zoo cage. The relationships to which I draw attention across these sites are at once structural, operational, technological, legal, and experiential / embodied. The forms of violence that span species boundaries at these sites are all a part of ordinary, everyday, industrialized violence in the United States and elsewhere, and thus this ‘carceral comparison’ amongst them is appropriate and timely.

The second symposium, on "Emerging Technologies and Strategies," was held in 1980 and pub lished as a special issue of Environmental and Experimental Botany. One of the aims of these symposia was to examine the current state of-the-art in tissue culture technology and to relate this state of technology to practical, applied, and commercial interests. Thus, the third of this series on development and variation focused on embryogenesis in culture: how to recognize it, factors which affect embryogenesis, use of embryogenic systems, etc.; and variability from culture. A special session on woody species again emphasized somatic embryogenesis as a means of rapid propagation. This volume emphasizes tissue culture of forest trees. All of these areas, we feel, are breakthrough areas in which significant progress is expected in the next few years.

In 1904, the first Scandinavian settlers moved onto the Spirit Lake Dakota Indian Reservation. These land-hungry immigrants struggled against severe poverty, often becoming the sharecropping tenants of Dakota landowners. Yet the homesteaders' impoverishment did not impede their quest to acquire Indian land, and by 1929 Scandinavians owned more reservation acreage than their Dakota neighbors. Norwegian homesteader Helena Haugen Kanten put it plainly: "We stole the land from the Indians." With this largely unknown story at its center, Encounter on the Great Plains brings together two dominant processes in American history: the unceasing migration of newcomers to North America, and the protracted dispossession of indigenous peoples who inhabited the continent. Drawing on fifteen years of archival research and 130 oral histories, Karen V. Hansen explores the epic issues of co-existence between settlers and Indians and the effect of racial hierarchies, both legal and cultural, on marginalized peoples. Hansen offers a wealth of intimate detail about daily lives and community events, showing how both Dakotas and Scandinavians resisted assimilation and used their rights as new citizens to combat attacks on their cultures. In this flowing narrative, women emerge as resourceful agents of their own economic interests. Dakota women gained autonomy in the use of their allotments, while Scandinavian women staked and "proved up" their own claims. Hansen chronicles the intertwined stories of Dakotas and immigrants-women and men, farmers, domestic servants, and day laborers. Their shared struggles reveal efforts to maintain a language, sustain a culture, and navigate their complex ties to more than one nation. The history of the American West cannot be told without these voices: their long connections, intermittent conflicts, and profound influence over one another defy easy categorization and provide a new perspective on the processes of immigration and land taking.

The third chapter of the Holy Bibles book of Ecclesiastes begins To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven . . . (KJV). This book is but a mere sample of observations made during various times the author experienced or an effort to capture a state of being or mood and express it through poetryas a christian. Being one who has made many mistakes (but acknowledging the Lord in all ways so that God can direct her path), From Beneath The Surface begins with an attempt to state the authors understanding of what Christianity is to her. One of the first few poems admits I Dont Know with regard to where to begin as a christian witness while continuing to seek the Lords purpose for her life. First View gives a brief glimpse of the authors humble beginnings. All poems in between the covers (from Fear to Givin Up) attempts to convey thoughts experienced while passing through situations while outside of Gods will (He Felt That Way One Day, Romantic Fool Unleashed, etc.)having gotten off track (Reality Attack)as well as inside of Gods will. Praying to God with Lord These People Need Help; understanding comes through Love Anyway; then a few philosophical words shared through such poems as Room For All and Grains of Sand. The author ends with the poem Keep the Faith Alive! which confirms that no matter what lies ahead, with faith in God, the Lord will see you through. Heres written proof that even a person with a messed-up life can witness for the Lord when called to do so. Having experienced hurt, abuse, anguish, pain, heartache, deception, discrimination, rejection, etc. (just like everyone else has), after prayerfully reading the Holy Bible, the author has grown to understand that love (in a godly mannerwith patience, kindness, endurance, steadfastness, etc.) is what the christian is supposed to do as Christs representative. Regardless of the situation or circumstance, ones belief, faith and love of God should shine through because With God, all things are possible. Please note that although this compilation was first copyrighted in May 1990, all works were written prior to 1988 and additional material has been added reflective through current situation. With a goal of putting something positive back into her communitywithout stepping on or using others to do so, Karen utilizes God-given talent and ability to interpret her lifes situation. (One could say these works touch on existentialisma philosophy centered upon the analysis of ones existence in the worldwith regard to the authors relationship with God at different times in her life.)
