Throughout the twelfth century, two rival clans, the Minomoto and the Taira, struggled for supremacy in Imperial Japan. Each attempted a rebellion and, for a time, the Taira gained ascendancy. But their rule turned despotic and at last, during the Genpei War of 1179-1185, the Minomoto drove the Taira out of the capital and took control for themselves. At the final battle of Dan-no-ura, the Taira-born child-emperor and his family all jumped into the Inland Sea to avoid capture and drowned. With them was lost the Imperial Sword, never to be seen again. The Minomoto leader took control, moved the capital, and became the first Shogun of Japan. That much is history. But wherefore come the tales of superhuman strength, the incredible insight, the clandestine knowledge of the Genpei War's heroes? There has been much speculation throughout the generations. Some have called the Minomoto's rise to power destiny, others call it a deal between humans and spirits-since even in death, the eternal Japanese warrior's spirit cannot be laid to rest. How much is truth, how much legend? One can never tell, for there are older, stranger tales as well.... Amid a frantic pace of life that often leaves us feeling disconnected and ungrounded, Receiving This Life helps the reader engage with life and become attuned to their belonging to God and each other. Kara K. Root empowers the reader to embrace life as sacred and receive it as a gift. The book offers reflections on living a life of presence and receptivity that seeks meaning and responds to God's promptings. It invites and models a stance of attunement that orients us toward receiving life's ordinary, holy moments as a gift, returning us to our deepest belonging. It includes prayers and liturgies that can be used by individuals, families, or congregations over and over again. Receiving This Life is a natural follow-up to Root's first book, The Deepest Belonging--pairing prayers and liturgies with further devotional essays on many of the topics covered there, such as death, disillusionment, sabbath, hope, and connections between human beings.

It is not possible to read Heidegger's text without the image of his arm raised in the Nazi salute haunting it. The image compels us to examine Heidegger's philosophy in terms of its susceptibility to Nazi ideology. Heidegger's philosophy was inscribed at the end of the history of philosophy, a time when Nazism was on the rise and on its way to the renewal of German destiny. In paragraph six of Being and Time Heidegger outlined his agenda for the renewal of philosophy. The renewal necessitated the destruction of the errant history of ontology in order to retrieve the pure primordial experiences. The parallels between the forms of two agendas are coincidental. However, my work shows where they overlapped. I explore the consequence of this overlap by soliciting the 'first' text of philosophy, The Anaximander Fragment, that speaks about justice and injustice. Justice is also at issue in the text of Jacques Derrida. Derrida's primary resource is paragraph six of Heidegger's Being and Time, a fact that caused some of his readers to assimilate him to Heidegger. Derrida has tried to distance himself from Heidegger and in a late text he has offered us the prescriptive phrase, "Deconstruction is justice," to guide our reading of his text. The phrase invites us to examine Derrida's work in light of its saying. This is what I try to do. I show that a separation cannot be accomplished without a price, because whether an author intends it or not, justice is something ghostly and it keeps its own account. Heidegger's arm and Derrida's hand caught in the trap of paragraph six tell another story, different from the stories the authors tell. The limbs tell the story about the ghosts of justice.

Even with the advances in intraocular lens technology and the growing diversity of refractive surgery techniques, the role of contact lenses in ophthalmic practice has only increased. This is due in part to the great strides in materials, technology, expanding applications (both refractive and therapeutic) for contact lenses, and the clear recognition that contact lenses will always be an important tool for the ophthalmologist. With the fitting of contact lenses as a medical art, requiring a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology and optics of the eye, this practice is formulaic only in part. The rest of contact lens practice requires sound medical judgment and decision- making that comes only with "hands-on" experience. The authors address this need by starting with a didactic approach that incorporates frequently-asked questions and straightforward answers so that the ophthalmology resident, intermediate contact lens practitioner, and optometrist will find this to be an indispensable resource.

With the offbeat charm of The Rosie Project and the generous warmth of The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot, this is a wry, moving debut novel about a pair of unforgettable siblings and a love triangle of sorts—one with math as its beating heart Mimi Brotherton, younger sister of Art, believes in truth. And most of the time, she believes in telling it. Art, a mathematical genius, believes in facts. Bound together by their parents’ tragic deaths, the siblings share their family home and have a strong, if unequal, relationship. Art has everything he needs (math and a devoted sister). Now, Mimi is ready for a life of her own. This might include love. At first, Art is cautiously enthusiastic, keen to demonstrate that love, like everything, is subject to rules. But when Mimi meets Frank, who is affable enough, but is another mathematician, Art bristles. He is on the cusp of solving a notoriously intractable equation, and success promises fame and fortune. But he fears that Frank may be after his sister for the wrong reasons. When both men are suddenly involved in a serious accident, Mimi is caught between the two. Can she trust her heart to guide her to the truth? In this delightful, bittersweet novel, Kara Gnodde explores how the answers to life’s questions—the bonds of family and the calculations of the heart—follow a logic of their own.
