There are different types of devices that can provide oxygen. Some use tanks of liquid or gas oxygen. Others use an oxygen concentrator, which pulls oxygen out of the air. The oxygen is administered through a nose tube (cannula), a mask, or a tent. The extra oxygen is breathed in along with normal air. This book is a concise guide to oxygen therapy for clinicians and trainees. Divided into four sections the text begins with an overview of the basic facts of oxygen, describing the different types and their individual uses in clinical therapy. Section two discusses the physiology and monitoring of oxygen therapy, and section three covers different devices and delivery systems, and oxygen toxicity (lung damage from breathing in too much extra oxygen). The final section examines oxygen targets in disease specifics, how the therapy works, and the effects of hypoxia (low oxygen levels in body tissues) and hypoxemia (low oxygen levels in the blood).

There is a lot to learn from this league of extraordinary gentlemen. They make such fine ambassadors of this great country of ours. While picking these 10 cricketers I did not have to think much because each of these gentlemen have made an impact on our lives in the last 25 years. Whether it is the Fabulous Four of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, or the spin duo of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, fantastic Virender Sehwag, flamboyant Yuvraj or the ever cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni or the magical Zaheer Khan, they have all made an impact in different ways. I have a lot to learn from each of these gentlemen because they have different qualities. Tendulkars humility is a lesson for all of us, Dravids steely resolve is worth emulating, Ganguly and MS Dhoni offer contrasting lessons in leadership skills. Similarly the fighting spirit of the spin pair of Kumble and Harbhajan or the devil-may-care attitude of Sehwag or the sheer natural ability of Yuvraj, coupled with the self-confidence of Zaheer. All this has impacted me and no doubt billions of others. As I compiled this book, I was left wondering how wonderful it was for Indian cricket to have all these gentlemen play almost at the same time. Very rarely have cricket teams been built around individuals who are the best at what they do. It is indeed a privilege and a honour to have seen these extraordinary cricketers in the same era. One can learn so much from simply playing back their exploits. The videos of their efforts still make for compelling viewing. As you would imagine I am a complete cricket nut. For me nothing else mattered. It therefore felt great to compile my thoughts on these 10 extraordinary cricketers.

It contains an in-depth study of the design and synthesis of gold nanoparticles and their application as a catalyst for direct gas phase propylene epoxidation. “Direct” means using only hydrogen and oxygen in one step, which is key for sustainable manufacturing, as opposed to commercialised, more complex production routes requiring multiple steps, or integration with another chemical plant. The insights gained can be used for rational design for stable and selective catalysts for other reactions. It also details the step-by-step process to build an epoxidation reactor system with a focus on safety aspects, which can be used as a guidebook for undergraduate and graduate students in chemical engineering. Beyond heterogeneous catalysis, the new, easily accomplished methodology for synthesising atomically precise nanoparticles is shown to be relevant to electrocatalysis and to healthcare applications, such as anti-microbial surfaces. This book will be of interest to researchers, engineers and experts in the related areas of chemical engineering, chemistry, material science and electrochemistry.

Tuberculosis is still a major threat to the human population, and understanding the strategies employed by Mycobacterium tuberculosis has been a challenge to researchers for decades. The significance of IL6 production in tuberculosis is still not clear, although it has been known for quite some time that IL6 interferes with IFN-γ induced signaling. Recently, research from our laboratory has identified a significant strategy adopted by virulent mycobacteria. Virulent mycobacteria upregulate IL6 production to inhibit IFN-γ induced autophagy formation, and thus avoid phagosome maturation and subsequent killing by lysosomal enzymes. This report is based on several observations. Exogenous IL6 inhibits IFN-γ induced autophagy in M. tuberculosis H37Rv-infected macrophages. M. tuberculosis H37Rv infection results in time-dependent production of IL6 in THP-1 cells, and neutralization of this endogenous IL6 by anti-IL6 antibody significantly enhances IFN-γ mediated killing of the intracellular bacteria. IL6 time-dependently lowers the Atg12–Atg5 complex and therefore inhibits autophagosome biogenesis rather than autophagolysosome formation. IL6 also affects IFN-γ mediated stimulation of mTOR, p38, and JNK pathways.
