Izima Kaoru is a prominent Japanese fashion photographer. Since 1993 he has combined his career with his own artistic pursuits, within his work Kaoru collaborates with an actress or model to photograph her fantasy of a perfect death. The collaboration extends to location, the actress' outfit and the manner of her death. He then constructs scenes and shoots a series of images from the panoramic to the close-up. The current series features Barbara Rudnik wearing Yohji Yamamoto, Helena Noguerra wearing Vivienne Westwood and Sato Yasue wearing John Galliano. The work asserts the artist's firm belief that death be viewed as an integral part of life; harnessing the power of beauty and horror and considering the part notions of death and beauty play in Japanese culture and psyche.
