It is a treatise of the consequential problems of interactions between population, resources and development. Resources play such a vital role in our economy that the evaluation of territorial distribution of resource-complexes and their potentialities for a balanced and integrated development cannot be disassociated from the wider field of planning for regional development. But the degree of exploitation of development potentials depends heavily upon human, socio-political and economic-technological factors; and variation in these attributes of man causes variation in resource evaluation and their utilization. In the present politico-economic structure those people who are conscious to their rights and those areas which are dominated by such people get benefits of developmental efforts. The tribal people and areas dominated by them could not exert decisive influence on decision-making of resource utilization and development planning. Consequently, all transportable resources are exported out of such regions.
Interrelationship between spatial structure and scenario of development is the focal theme of this volume. Attributes of the environment, man, his culture and society and their interaction shape the spatial structure which ultimately determine the pace of development. Unless transferential approach of resource exploitation is not changed to transformational one it is difficult to reduce the glaring disparity in development. Transformational approach is people oriented and nature oriented development concept, in which social justice, welfare, quality of life and environmental protection are kept at par with the economic growth.

Sustainable Development: Constraints and Opportunities contains a selection of the author's speeches made between 1982 and 1986. During this 5-year period knowledge of environment-development relationships has grown considerably, and this evolving perception can be discerned in his statements spanning those years. Taken together, the common thread binding all the speeches is the fact that long-term development can only be achieved through sound environmental management, that is, sustainable development, which is the title of this book. The speeches included in this volume were delivered in the author's capacity as the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). They thus cover primarily broad areas of interest of UNEP's programs and policies. Key topics discussed include environmental protection; disarmament and the environment; environmental information for engineers; the impact of human settlements on the environment; environmental management in the Gulf; the causes, effects, and prevention of desertification; and the environmental impact assessment process.
The drive to develop more sustainable materials has made fly ash a valuable raw material in many different applications. Comprehensive and authoritative, Handbook of Fly Ash highlights the latest research efforts to develop the properties of fly ash to maximum utility while safeguarding the environment. A hate video goes viral. A dying father sets out in search of the living. A daughter risks all to follow her head and heart. The Patient in Bed Number 12 is a remarkable novel framed as a confession from parent to child, from child to parent. In this profoundly moving exchange, secrets long buried tumble out, mysterious and dreamlike: a grieving mother finds solace in a newspaper photograph; a ghost comes to life in an abandoned fridge; children fill empty jars with the night’s darkness; a young couple plan how to seek permission for their love; and three men with a phone camera turn a family’s world upside down. Just as one breath holds in its end the beginning of another, each story’s close becomes the opening for the next—linking fragile strands of individual lives into a tapestry of hope and heartbreak. From Raj Kamal Jha, India’s ‘novelist of the newsroom,’ comes a searing investigation of the pulse of today’s India: a billion-plus young people, restless and ambitious, trying to shed the burdens of their past—and yet haunted by ghosts of mistrust and hate.
The book especially deals with the peasant unrest and uprisings in the erstwhile three districts of Assam viz. Kamrup, Darrang, and Nowgong from 1858 to 1894. The year 1858 has been taken as a starting point, as it has a special importance in the history of the British India. After the Great Mutiny of 1857, Assam, like other parts of India, went into the hands of the British Crown in 1858. The colonial government decided to augment the rate of revenue on land from this year with a view to meet their loss in the Great Mutiny. Hence, this year may be termed as the confrontation Year between the peasants and the government, which continued up to 1894 and even beyond that. The peasant unrest of Assam has fetched some new aspects into focus, and some of them has been referred herein proper places. The specific period (185894) has yet not been studied, albeit lots have been done in this field. It is because of that that it has received not due attention as is given to the same phenomena in other parts of India. This work is an endeavor to give as far as possible a comprehensive, accessible, and crystal picture of a series of complex scenario.
This book provides a systematic way of how to make better decisions in water resources management. The applications of three weighting methods namely rating, ranking, and ratio are discussed in this book. Additionally, data mining on keywords is presented using three popular scholarly databases: Science Direct, Scopus, and SciVerse. Four abbreviated keywords (MCDM, MCDA, MCA, MADM) representing multi-criteria decision-making were used and these three databases were searched for different popular weighting methods for a period of 13 years (2000-2012). The book provides also a review of weighting methods applied in various multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods and also presents survey results on priority ranking of watershed management criteria undertaken by 30 undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
