Art in Odd Places 2011: RITUAL Ceremony. Habituation. Myth. Obsession. Superstition. Liturgy. Art in Odd Places (AiOP) is a thematic, annual festival that presents visual and performance art in public spaces along 14th Street in Manhattan, NYC each October. In 2011, over sixty artists and performers created public art interventions as part of Art in Odd Places 2011: RITUAL. This richly illustrated catalogue is both a document of, and critical extension on, the diverse projects that were presented. Including commentary by leading practitioners in contemporary art and urban design including: AiOP Founder and Director, Ed Woodham, co-curators Kalia Brooks and Trinidad Fombella, Juliana Driever, Victoria Marshall, Adam Brent, Ernesto Pujol, and Linda Mary Montano. AiOP is an artist-led initiative that uses 14th Street as a laboratory to locate cracks in public space policies, question the dehumanization of the urban landscape, and celebrate the theater of civic space.

The culmination of Ravi Kalia's trilogy on the formation of capital cities in postcolonial India, Gandhinagar joins the historian's other two volumes, on Chandigarh and Bhubaneswar, in tracing India's efforts to establish its twentieth-century architectural identity. In following the development of these cities, Kalia recounts India's progression through precolonial, British, modern, and postmodern theory and practice, particularly the architectural ideology propagated by Western a rchitects Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn. Kalia explains that Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat in western India, became a battleground for the competing ideals that had surfaced during the building of Chandigarh and Bhubaneswar. The mill owners of the neighboring city of Ahmedabad, backed by Indian architect and planner Balkrishna Doshi, wanted the American Louis Kahn to build Gandhinagar as a worthy rival to Le Corbusier's Chandigarh. There was, however, tremendous political pressure to make Gandhinagar a purely Indian enterprise, partly because the state of Gujarat was the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. Doshi and then by American-trained H. K. Mewada, who had apprenticed with Le Corbusier in Chandigarh Kalia shows that, unlike the other two cities, Gandhinagar would become emblematic of Gandhian ideals of swadeshi (indigenous) goods and swaraj (self-rule). Exploring the impact of modernist architecture on India as a whole, Kalia suggests that the style gained acceptance because its parsimonious designs and unadorned spaces never represented a threat to a religiously pluralist country anxious to create a secular identity. He explains how two competing versions of Indian history and ideology - Ganhdi's and Jawaharlal Nehru's - employed modemism's ideals for their own separate ends. Serving two masters, as Kalia illustrates, created constrictions and tensions evident in the building of Gandhinagar and in the careers of many Indian architects, including Doshi, Charles Correa, and Achyut Kanvinde.
The second volume of Condensed Matter Theories contains the proceedings of the 10th International Workshop held at Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL, U.S.A. during the week of July 21, 1986. The workshop was attended by high-energy, nuclear and condensed-matter physicists as well as materials scientists. This diverse blend of participants was in keeping with the flavor of the previous workshops. This annual series of international workshops was"started in 1977 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Subsequent'workshops were held in Trieste (Italy), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Caracas (Venezuela), Altenberg (West Germany), Granada (Spain), and San Francisco (U.S.A.). What began as a meeting of the physicists from the Western Hemisphere has expanded in the last three years into an international conference of scientists with diverse interests and backgrounds. This diversity has promoted a healthy exchange of ideas from different branches of physics and also fruitful interactions among the participants. The present volume is a continuation of the effort started last year when the invited papers from the 9th International Workshop were published by Plenum Press. Our only trepidation in organizing a book of this kind stemmed from the diversity of the material, which did not lend itself easily to well-defined topics. Still, the articles are loosely divided into eight categories, where the papers in each category have either a common theme or the same underlying technique.

The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center (PPAC) and renowned conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas, curator Kalia Brooks and other collaborating artists, including Lisa Fairstein, Wyatt Gallery, Hiroyuki Ito, and Will Steacy, as well as the residents of South Kensington have collaborated on the multi-faceted, socially engaged and community driven initiative, the Philly Block Project. The Philly Block Project created a visual narrative, past and present, of South Kensington in an array of free public arts programs, two exhibitions, a pop-up park, and Arts Carnival and the South Kensington Community Archive.
