Weaving Peace: Essays on Peace, Governance and Conflict Transformation in the Great Lakes Region of Africa provides a unique and interdisciplinary perspective on issues of peace, governance, and conflict transformation by academics and practitioners from eight partner institutions of the United Nations Mandated-University for Peace in the Great Lakes region of Africa. It is an essential tool for scholars and policymakers seeking contextual clarity behind the headlines about the nature and extent of conflicts in the region and how to go about transforming the region. It provides a rather nuanced perspective of the complexity of the peace/conflict dynamics of the region and underscores the inescapable truth of the need for a more indigenous and context-based approach to understanding the Great Lakes region of Africa.
We take you on a discovery of the root causes of African conflicts; the attempts by continental organizations such as the Organization of African Unity to resolve these conflicts; the reasons for the inability of the OAU/AU to succeed in conflict resolution; the root causes of the Burundi Conflict; the Burundi Peace process as a reflection of how conflicts are resolved in Africa and why we think it does not lead to sustainable peace which we term negative peace. Burundis Negative Peace explores the largely unknown area of negative peace in Africa and specifically Burundi in the wake of the manner in which conflicts are resolved throughout the continent. The use of mediation among warring parties, the implementation of ceasefire agreements, the establishment of a transitional government and the organization of elections has been the conflict resolution trajectory that has been religiously applied in resolving African conflicts. What then is the missing link? The authors fervently believe that the above mentioned techniques do not lead to sustainable peace. In fact it leads to negative peace which is not peace at all. The peace studies theorist, Galtung, decreed that Peace is not the absence of violence, but peace of mind.

This book offers a damning indictment on the pretentious, rapacious, corrupt and intrigue ridden atmosphere which characterize both the old guard's leadership of the aspiration for self determination of the English speaking people of Cameroon and the battle and commitment of a resurgent new guard and youth organization to salvage the battered image and find relevance within the Southern Cameroons discourse. The author believes that the activities of the old guard has severely damaged the integrity of the Cameroon State and the desire for statehood/ autonomy of the Anglophones and submits that, it is time to give way to a new breed of leaders with foresight, commitment and a dedication to the democratic norm of leadership renewal.
