In high school, Swaraj was struck with grief and anxiety and lived in panic and regret. His eyes were filled with tears of helplessness as he sauntered aimlessly in the dark. Then came a ray of hope in the form of music, which helped him overcome his afflictions, pick up the pieces and look ahead in life. Swaraj then began a wonderful journey in one of India’s prestigious colleges. Life in campus, with several ups and downs, marked an important detour in his journey, as he steered towards a life in music. The departure of his mother, who had always been his source of inspiration, threatened to overpower him once again. A fear of being stranded and not reaching the destination gripped him. But once he discovered the power within, he derived the strength needed to endure difficulties and conquer challenges. All through his life, Swaraj kept his dreams alive, guided by his strengths: his parents, his passion for music, and the true love of a real friend. When everything came in perfect harmony with the universe, his predicaments eventually became accomplishments.
Not the Second Sex is about some of the women I had met around the world in the last thirty years. These women had instilled a firm belief in me that women are in fact not the second sex and that a man appears to be superior only because they allow him to be so. Laila “All that investment is only for removing the dress and become naked at the end of the day in front of a man,” Krishna said to Laila, a gorgeous fashion model in Mumbai, when she was bolstering about the efforts she had to take to dress and make up. Annie “Given a choice, a woman will always choose a man with whom she would be happy rather than comfortable. A man never understands that.” Rachel “Author Rebecca West said, ‘I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.” Maitreyi Maitreyi asked Yajnavalkya her husband, the great intellect and renowned sage, “If you leave me with all your wealth to seek the Brahman, what shall I do with that by which I cannot become an immortal?.”

SEEKING HELP IS AN ACT OF COURAGE There is pitifully little awareness about mental health issues in our country. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), depression and not diabetes or hypertension, will be soon be the biggest killer of the modern world. The general perception is that people are either mentally healthy, or nutcases, requiring psychiatric intervention. The truth is that many mental health issues are transient. They fall into the category of mental ‘sprains’ and not ‘fractures’. They can be healed with the help of a trained counselor. This book deals with subjects such as anxiety, depression, marriage, suicide, child sexual abuse, adolescences and stress. Based on actual case studies, the text is written in simple, lucid language, devoid of technical jargon. Most books in this category are useful as guides for professionals or students of psychology, who are well versed with theory but need practical insights. But this book is primarily for lay people,; for them to obtain a better understanding about themselves; and to provide insights to caregivers, who deal with the mentally unwell on a regular basis and consequently live in a continuum of stress. Above all, these pages provide a non-judgemental and refreshingly practical look at a subject that must become part of our collective understanding about human existence.
