Explaining the curious legal doctrine of "coverture," William Blackstone famously declared that "by marriage, husband and wife are one person at law." This "covering" of a wife's legal identity by her husband meant that the greatest subordination of women to men developed within marriage. In England and its colonies, generations of judges, legislators, and husbands invoked coverture to limit married women's rights and property, but there was no monolithic concept of coverture and their justifications shifted to fit changing times: Were husband and wife lord and subject? Master and servant? Guardian and ward? Or one person at law? The essays in Married Women and the Law offer new insights into the legal effects of marriage for women from medieval to modern times. Focusing on the years prior to the passage of the Divorce Acts and Married Women's Property Acts in the late nineteenth century, contributors examine a variety of jurisdictions in the common law world, from civil courts to ecclesiastical and criminal courts. By bringing together studies of several common law jurisdictions over a span of centuries, they show how similar legal rules persisted and developed in different environments. This volume reveals not only legal changes and the women who creatively used or subverted coverture, but also astonishing continuities. The extra Calvinisticum, the doctrine that the eternal Son maintains his existence beyond the flesh both during his earthly ministry and perpetually, divided the Lutheran and Reformed traditions during the Reformation. This book explores the emergence and development of the extra Calvinisticum in the Reformed tradition by tracing its first exposition from Ulrich Zwingli to early Reformed orthodoxy. Rather than being an ancillary issue, the questions surrounding the extra Calvinisticum were a determinative factor in the differentiation of Magisterial Protestantism into rival confessions. Reformed theologians maintained this doctrine in order to preserve the integrity of both Christ's divine and human natures as the mediator between God and humanity. This rationale remained consistent across this period with increasing elaboration and sophistication to meet the challenges leveled against the doctrine in Lutheran polemics. The study begins with Zwingli's early use of the extra Calvinisticum in the Eucharistic controversy with Martin Luther and especially as the alternative to Luther's doctrine of the ubiquity of Christ's human body. Over time, Reformed theologians, such as Peter Martyr Vermigli and Antione de Chandieu, articulated the extra Calvinisticum with increasing rigor by incorporating conciliar christology, the church fathers, and scholastic methodology to address the polemical needs of engagement with Lutheranism. The Flesh of the Word illustrates the development of christological doctrine by Reformed theologians offering a coherent historical narrative of Reformed christology from its emergence into the period of confessionalization. The extra Calvinisticum was interconnected to broader concerns affecting concepts of the union of Christ's natures, the communication of attributes, and the understanding of heaven.

England is well known as the only Protestant state not to introduce divorce in the sixteenth-century Reformation. Only at the end of the seventeenth century did divorce by private act of parliament become available for a select few men and only in 1857 did the Divorce Act and its creation of judicial divorces extend the possibility more broadly. Aspects of the history of divorce are well known from studies which typically privilege the records of the church courts that claimed a monopoly on marriage. But why did England alone of all Protestant jurisdictions not allow divorce with remarriage in the era of the Reformation, and how did people in failed marriages cope with this absence? One part of the answer to the first question, Kesselring and Stretton argue, and a factor that shaped people's responses to the second, lay in another distinctive aspect of English law: its common-law formulation of coverture, the umbrella term for married women's legal status and property rights. The bonds of marriage stayed tightly tied in post-Reformation England in part because marriage was as much about wealth as it was about salvation or sexuality, and English society had deeply invested in a system that subordinated a wife's identity and property to those of the man she married. To understand this dimension of divorce's history, this study looks beyond the church courts to the records of other judicial bodies, the secular courts of common law and equity, to bring fresh perspective to a history that remains relevant today.

Homicide has a history. In early modern England, that history saw two especially notable developments: one, the emergence in the sixteenth century of a formal distinction between murder and manslaughter, made meaningful through a lighter punishment than death for the latter, and two, a significant reduction in the rates of homicides individuals perpetrated on each other. Making Murder Public explores connections between these two changes. It demonstrates the value in distinguishing between murder and manslaughter, or at least in seeing how that distinction came to matter in a period which also witnessed dramatic drops in the occurrence of homicidal violence. Focused on the 'politics of murder', Making Murder Public examines how homicide became more effectively criminalized between 1480 and 1680, with chapters devoted to coroners' inquests, appeals and private compensation, duels and private vengeance, and print and public punishment. The English had begun moving away from treating homicide as an offence subject to private settlements or vengeance long before other Europeans, at least from the twelfth century. What happened in the early modern period was, in some ways, a continuation of processes long underway, but intensified and refocused by developments from 1480 to 1680. Making Murder Public argues that homicide became fully 'public' in these years, with killings seen to violate a 'king's peace' that people increasingly conflated with or subordinated to the 'public peace' or 'public justice.

Infinite Creator Drive Is way beyond a great read'. It's an epic journey.' The Story makes for an awesome travelling companion for those surfers and holiday makers requiring a great adventure of the mind and spirit. K.J.Gordon has taken the beauty of Australia, the World and the Universe and presented not only a great read, it propels a world embracing free energy. And yes there are consequences of Biblical proportions. The story has several plots some shallow and funny some deep and thought provoking. Infinite Creator Drive is an interesting space journey of discovery - As well as being thoroughly entertaining. L.Haydn Gully June 2015 REVIEW Infinite Creator Drive is a revealing romp through space. There is an abundance of plausible technology and future incite from the author K J GORDON. And there are aspects which really make the reader stop and think. The concept dealing with superior alien life is very original and shows a depth in marine science and biochemistry which must remain un-discussed as not to spoil the surprise and or shock. The addition of DNA characters of legend add authentic aspects to the ‘life' discussion as it flows through the entire story line. And indeed, not without a twist in the tail. The story of Infinite Creator Drive has a depth of unusual twists and is not so much pitched as sprayed across the imagination. The reader needs to take stock of relative time as the journey hurtles through existing science on its way to find a new humanity. One needs the seatbelts well tightened for this journey, as well as safety gear for the powerful riding of surfing waves in Oz and on an amazing planet called Endev. The future tech of DNA manufacture, rolling through the subplots, is rather compelling as we are just discovering these future concepts for real. And one wonders at the authors incite. Here is a new science of science fiction written in the non-publishable genre of Aussie Fly Boys meet the most famous man on the planet, Science Fiction. The mind boggles at the ploy. It will never work? The fly boys, being surfer bums with attitude, while the most famous man of his time is an aboriginal man from Alice Springs. He invents anti-gravity. And yes the love interest would be worth meeting for real as her unordinary charm captivates in unusual ways. Lastly, there lies an interesting undercurrent of mental instability and aspergers twinkling lightly through the sub plots as well. The chapter on emotional balance as aspects of understanding Karma will stay with the reader long after they have shed a tear as the end draws near. Pyramid meditation will be required. Infinite Creator Drive is ironically well ahead of its time, past present and future. And the concept of who or what the Infinite Creator Drive is will check the reader's thought processors. And very lastly, the imagery will test the horizons of those prepared to take a journey that pumps the heart in its pace and yet brings a tear in emotive depth. Definitely too long for a movie but what a ride that would.

We live in age when the fear of hell no longer holds sway in society and even in the church the subject is so rarely mooted it seems almost taboo. The reason for that, it is argued, is fundamentally the consequence of evolution becoming the accepted explanation for the origin of our existence: by undermining the biblical explanation for Creation it has undermined the whole of the biblical witness. By arguing that evolution is demonstrably false and, to the contrary, drawing on science that presents compelling evidence that the natural world has a Creator, Hell: Are You Serious? argues that we therefore live in perilous times: since we have good reason to believe that the Bible is true and in particular that the teaching of Jesus is true, especially as it is borne out in the lives and experience of those who put their trust in Him, we have to conclude that His warning of an eternal and final punishment for the unrighteous is a very real danger. Hell: Are You Serious? reaffirms the terrifying message of Jesus about hell and who goes there. Asking readers to be honest with themselves about what it is they believe and why they believe it, it makes an earnest appeal for them to consider the warnings of Christ afresh and believe.

Marginal Comment, which attracted keen and widespread interest on its original publication in 1994, is the remarkable memoir of one of the most distinguished classical scholars of the modern era. Its author, Sir Kenneth Dover, whose academic publications included the pathbreaking book Greek Homosexuality (1978, reissued by Bloomsbury in 2016), conceived of it as an 'experimental' autobiography – ruthlessly candid in retracing the full range of the author's experiences, both private and public, and unflinching in its attempt to analyse the entanglements between the life of the mind and the life of the body. Dover's distinguished career involved not only an influential series of writings about the ancient Greeks but also a number of prominent positions of leadership, including the presidencies of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and the British Academy. It was in those positions that he became involved in several high-profile controversies, including the blocking of an honorary degree for Margaret Thatcher from Oxford University, and a bitter debate in the British Academy over the fellowship of Anthony Blunt after his exposure as a former Soviet spy. This edition of Marginal Comment is much more than a reissue: it includes an introduction which frames the book in relation to its author's life and work, as well as annotations based in part on materials originally excluded by Dover but left in his personal papers on this death. Now newly available, the memoir provides not only the self-portrait of an exceptional individual but a rich case-study in the intersections between an intellectual life and its social contexts.
