Next to the apostle Paul, Luke is the best-known author in the New Testament. Yet, he is more than likely the one we know the least. As a physician, we know Luke was from a well-to-do family. Excellence in Greek grammar demonstrates he was well educated. How and where he came into the company of Paul, we know not. We do know that by the time Paul arrived in Troas, Luke was part of the entourage. This fact is evinced when Luke’s writing turns from third person to first person omniscient in Acts 16:10. From that point on, Luke writes from firsthand experience. His desire to put forth an accurate account of the life of Christ displays a deep commitment by witnessing his faith in the risen Lord. How and where he researched his gospel information is unknown as Jesus’ parents would most certainly have passed away by the time he met Paul. Did Luke marry? Was he ever married? How did he come to witness the life of Christ to Theopolis? Join Luke in a journey into the past and discover a life most fascinating. Relive the events and forces that endeavored to eradicate our faith.
The phrase “When there was no king in Israel” is used by Hebrew scribes to justify the rejection of God as King in preparation for a long-desired earthly king. All so they could be like everyone else. Deborah’s leadership and Yael’s bravery are explored. “The Levite’s concubine” sheds more light on the distasteful story of human trafficking by giving a voiceless Adina the ability to tell her tale of abuse. The hopeless dilemma of Naomi reveals how women with no rights had to conspire to overcome the adversity faced in trying to obtain justice in a male-dominated society. Naomi demonstrates how the church has “cleaned up” her story to make Ruth appear as a temple of purity and an example of untarnished morals. Finally, Saul is called upon to defeat King Nahash and rescue the people of Yabesh. When the people cry for a king, God relents, and Samuel anoints Saul. Saul calls upon God to give him victory over King Agag, but he disobeys God’s first command. Disobedience leads to Saul’s downfall and sets the stage for David to be anointed, the second king of Israel.

There is a vast body of imaginal literature in Bengali that introduces fictional Sufi saints into the complex mythological world of Hindu gods and goddesses. Dating to the sixteenth century, the stories—pir katha—are still widely read and performed today. The events that play out rival the fabulations of the Arabian Nights, which has led them to be dismissed as simplistic folktales, yet the work of these stories is profound: they provide fascinating insight into how Islam habituated itself into the cultural life of the Bangla-speaking world. In Witness to Marvels, Tony K. Stewart unearths the dazzling tales of Sufi saints to signal a bold new perspective on the subtle ways Islam assumed its distinctive form in Bengal.
Abraham is the first of an exciting new four-part series titled Ghosts of the Shephelah. It will take you inside the stories that built our faith. On that journey, you will meet the people, experience the trials, hardships, and prejudice faced by a foreign people in a new land. You will laugh with the truly universal questions children will ask and cry with the hate that has ever tried to pit man against man. In an effort to retain Israel's history for future generations, Moshe instructs Miryam to begin training Levite storytellers to commit to memory the life story of Abraham. The narrative weaves back and forth between the major events of both the Exodus and the travels of Abraham and Sarah. Using biblical facts, the author has made sense of the many issues the church continually fails to acknowledge. Some facts will surprise, others will astonish, while still others will enlighten the reader. Above all, the reader will gain an understanding of how God's neverending love for all creation has the ability to forgive, and how God's determination to continue to offer forgiveness is culminated in the gift of Christ Jesus, the son of God.
The life of King David was anything but uneventful. Born of a mother accused of adultery and raised as the bastard son of a tribal leader, no one ever expected this boy to become Israel's greatest warrior and king. Ostracized by his brothers, his youth was spent as an isolated shepherd, honing his skills with sling and lyre. Loneliness, offset by creativity, inspired his many heartfelt psalms of pain and praise to his God. Secure in the confidence that he could slay lion and bear, shielded by the armor of faith, one mighty act transformed David from lowliness to prominence. Two armies watched a single stone from his sling crack open the head of the Philistine giant, Goliath. In an instant, David turned the tide of Israel's battle from defeat to victory. His fame became a source of jealousy for Saul, his disobedient king. Surviving numerous attempts on his life, David refused to take the life of the LORD's anointed. Following Saul's death in battle, David's lust caused him to do the things kings will do. Adultery led to murder and deceit. Spoiled children were a result of his fall from grace. Come, hear David's story in his own words.

It seems at least every generation the US has sent young men to war. Although each one has its unique character they all take many young and less experienced men, and now women, and ask them to perform acts of violence only dimly hinted in movies and the media. One thing all wars have in common is the government never prepares itself or their armed forces for the toll it takes on human beings and returning veterans, nor does it consider the impact of homecoming and transition these soldiers are expected to make. Token parades or superficial and transient expressions of appreciation can in no way make up for the price we pay. Many returning veterans have found release in writing, art, family and public service. Many have never found their way home and some never will. These are just some of one man's thoughts and feelings about his experience. Although war is always big business, for those of us that fight it, it is personal.
“Brave and vivid.”—New York Review of Books These enchanting stories from early modern Bengal reveal how Hindu and Muslim traditions converged on timeless themes of human morality, social culture, and survival. The Bengali stories in this collection are first and foremost tales of survival. Each story in Needle at the Bottom of the Sea underscores the need for people to work together—not just to overcome the challenges of living in the Sundarban swamps of Bengal, but also to ease hostilities born of social differences in religion, caste, and economic class. Translated by award-winning scholar of early modern Bengali literature Tony K. Stewart, Needle at the Bottom of the Sea brims with fantasy and excitement. Sufi protagonists travel through a world of wonder where tigers talk and men magically grow into giants, a Hindu princess falls in love with a Muslim holy man, and goddesses rub shoulders with kings and merchants. Across religion, class, and gender, what binds these fabulous stories together is the characters’ pursuit of living honorably and morally in a difficult, corrupt world.
Many Canadian parties are shifting their process for selecting leaders from delegate conventions to methods that -- at least in theory -- allow all members to vote for the leader. In the leadership selections of the 1990s, Alberta's governing Conservatives used a primary balloting system, the opposition Liberal Party allowed members to vote by phone, and the NDP held a traditional leadership convention. In Quasi-Democracy? David Stewart and Keith Archer examine political parties and leadership selection in Alberta using mail-back surveys administered to voters who participated in the Conservative, Liberal, and NDP leadership conventions elections of the 1990s. Leadership selection events, they contend, provide rare opportunities for observing the internal workings of the parties and people who "stand between the politicians and the electorate." Using participant accounts and material from the press media, the authors analyze the factors that influence leadership selection in each party, develop attitudinal profiles of the supporters of the parties, and examine the party activists with respect to their backgrounds in provincial and federal politics. Quasi-Democracy? will be invaluable reading for students and scholars of party democracy and representation, and for those interested in the intricate machinations of the political process in Alberta.
This book is for readers who want to destroy the tyranny of tradition that keeps organizations in the managerial dark-ages, and transform clubs, associations, agencies and businesses into something of greater value. It reveals how to create cultures delivering strong attachments and high performance. However, our task is not as simple as it appears, since culture and its mirror image identity, present slippery concepts. Securing an early agreement on exactly what constitutes culture, and how it works, remains essential before we proceed any further. In short, organizational culture and identity comprise the shared values, beliefs and assumptions that influence the attitudes, habits, customs and behavior of an organization's members.
