Around the globe, besides fungal and bacterial diseases, both virus and viroid diseases have acquired greater importance in the realm of plant pathology and call for effective management measures as they are responsible for heavy yield losses and are a matter of vital importance and concern to farmers, horticulturists, gardeners and foresters. Understanding disease epidemiology is of vital importance for formulating viable disease management practices in a given agro-ecosystem. The development and progress of plant disease epidemics are variable from region to region. Epidemiology is not a static process, but rather a dynamic course that varies with a change in the ecology, host, vector and virus systems.
This volume deals with the basic knowledge and understanding of fundamental interactions of low energy electrons with molecules. It pro vides an up-to-date and comprehensive account of the fundamental in teractions of low-energy electrons with molecules of current interest in modern technology, especially the semiconductor industry. The primary electron-molecule interaction processes of elastic and in elastic electron scattering, electron-impact ionization, electron-impact dissociation, and electron attachment are discussed, and state-of-the art authoritative data on the cross sections of these processes as well as on rate and transport coefficients are provided. This fundamental knowledge has been obtained by us over the last eight years through a critical review and comprehensive assessment of "all" available data on low-energy electron collisions with plasma processing gases which we conducted at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Data from this work were originally published in the Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data, and have been updated and expanded here. The fundamental electron-molecule interaction processes are discussed in Chapter 1. The cross sections and rate coefficients most often used to describe these interactions are defined in Chapter 2, where some recent advances in the methods employed for their measurement or calculation are outlined. The methodology we adopted for the critical evaluation, synthesis, and assessment of the existing data is described in Chapter 3. The critically assessed data and recommended or suggested cross sections and rate and transport coefficients for ten plasma etching gases are presented and discussed in Chapters 4, 5, and 6.
Amylases are well known for applications ranging from starch and food processes industry to medical applications. The increased demand for these enzymes in various industries has led to an enormous interest in developing enzymes with better properties such as raw starch degrading amylases. It is suggested that banana peel and male inflorescence could employ as a promising substrate for the production of amylase by Aspergillus niger. Further, solid state fermentation is a better choice for amylase production. The addition of external growth medium is also found beneficial for increasing enzyme production. The present study was undertaken to isolate, identify and characterize the Aspergillus niger in the culture medium followed by amylase production and extraction. The banana parts used here as substrates are ripe fruit peel and male inflorescence from locally cultivated species Ethan (Nendran), Palayamkodan (Palayanthodan), Rasakadali (Njali Poovan) and Sundari. The result shows that amylase from sundari peel have the best activity followed by Ethan peel. Ethan flower bud shows the least activity among the eight substrates under study.

The term ‘seaweed’ represents an assemblage of a diverse group of photosynthetic aquatic plants that are exceptionally unique in their form, function, structure, and biochemical composition. In Far East Asian countries, seaweeds are popularly utilised in human food preparations, in addition to being used as a source of raw material for the extraction of industrially important phycocolloids and agro-based products. More recently, there has been growing interest in the application of seaweed ingredients in beauty and novelty food products, nutraceuticals, bioplastics, and beverages, among others, as well as its potential as a source for biofuels Seaweed, though it is a primitive plant, has complex morphological structure, meaning species-level identification of an individual seaweed is a difficult task. This volume describes the identification characteristics of 256 seaweed species collected from the south-east coast of India; comprising 71 species of green algae (chlorophyceae), 46 species of brown algae (phaeophyceae) and 139 species of red algae (rhodophyceae). Key taxonomic characteristics detailed here allow the confirmation of identification of different kinds of seaweed. The wish of an individual or of a couple to have offspring is an absolute which requires no further justification, and there can be few challenges to a physician as essential as the spouses' predicament in a childless marriage. Only with a special knowledge of the function, pathology and pathophysiology of the reproductive system is he properly equipped to meet that challenge.
Petroleum refineries around the world have generated solid wastes during refining process and stocking of crude oil. This leads to critical effects in the environment. Thus remediation of these hydrocarbons by natural decontamination is of at most importance. Bioremediation is a non-invasive and cost effective technique for the clean-up of these petroleum hydrocarbons. In this study I have investigated the ability of microorganism present in the soil sample collected from petroleum contaminated area of Kalady, Kerala, to degrade the hydrocarbons. The soil samples collected were initially screened for diesel degraders by culturing isolates in BH media with diesel as carbon and energy source . The diesel oil degraders were identified as bacillus and pseudomonas based on the morphological and biochemical studies The ability of these microorganisms to grow by using diesel as carbon source were analysed by culturing them in BHMS broth and evaluating their growth colourimetrically

India is among the largest banana producing countries and thus banana pseudostem is commonly available agricultural waste to be used as lignocellulosic substrate. Present study focuses on exploitation of banana pseudostem as a source for bioethanol production. In this experiment, we have used three different microorganisms, S. cerevisiae, E. coli and C. albicans, these were found to be better for ethanol production. Substrates were enzymatically saccharified by the inoculation of isolated microorganism for the production of ethanol. Optimal pH and temperature for better yield of ethanol were 5.6 to 6.5 and room temperature respectively. Autoclave pre-treatment protected the samples from contamination and increased volume of ethanol. The total sugar content and ethanol yield in the fermentation was estimated during the period (1 day interval) of fermentation and concluded that amount of total sugar content gradually decreased due to the microbial utilization( as energy source), when ethanol content increases.
