Mirror of Morality takes an interdisciplinary look at an important form of pictorial art produced during two millennia of Chinese imperial rule. Ideas about individual morality and state ideology were based on the ancient teachings of Confucius with modifications by later interpreters and government institutions. Throughout the imperial period, members of the elite made, sponsored, and inscribed or used illustrations of themes taken from history, literature, and recent events to promote desired conduct among various social groups. This dimension of Chinese art history has never before been broadly covered or investigated in historical context. The first half of the study examines the nature of narrative illustration in China and traces the evolution of its functions, conventions, and rhetorical strategies from the second century BCE through the eleventh century. Under the stimulus of Buddhism, sophisticated techniques developed for representing stories in visual form. While tracing changes in the social functions and cultural positions of narrative illustration, the second half of the book argues that narrative illustration continued to play a vital role in elite visual culture.

The field of superconductivity has tremendous potential for growth and further development in industrial applications. This book traces the shared culture of the Chinese elite from the seventh to the twelfth centuries. The early T'ang definition of 'This Culture of Ours' combined literary and scholarly traditions from the previous five centuries. The late Sung Neo-Confucian movement challenged that definition. The author argues that the Tang-Sung transition is best understood as a transition from a literary view of culture - in which literary accomplishment and mastery of traditional forms were regarded as essential - to the ethical orientation of Neo-Confucianism, in which the cultivation of one's innate moral ability was regarded as the goal of learning. The author shows that this transformation paralleled the collapse of the T'ang order and the restoration of a centralized empire under the Sung, underscoring the connection between elite formation and political institutions.

Confucius (also known as Kong Qiu, 孔丘, and Kong Zhong Ni, 孔仲尼, 551 - 479 BC) was a prominent, if not the most influential, philosopher of China. Wang Gungwu is one of the most influential historians of his generation. Initially renowned for his pioneering work on the structure of power in early imperial China, he is more widely known for expanding the horizons of Chinese history to include the histories of the Chinese and their descendents outside China. The phenomenon of Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) has been known for some time and was first treated theoretically by Kronig in the 1930s. Recent developments, initiated by Sayers, Stern, and Lytle in the early 1970s, have led to the recognition of the structural content of this technique. At the same time, the availability of synchrotron radiation has greatly improved both the acquisition and the quality of the EXAFS data over those obtainable from conventional X-ray sources. Such developments have established EXAFS as a powerful tool for structure studies. EXAFS has been successfully applied to a wide range of significant scientific and technological systems in many diverse fields such as inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, catalysis, material sciences, etc. It is extremely useful for systems where single-crystal diffraction techniques are not readily applicable (e.g., gas, liquid, solution, amorphous and polycrystalline solids, surfaces, polymer, etc.). Despite the fact that the EXAFS technique and applications have matured tremendously over the past decade or so, no introductory textbook exists. EXAFS: Basic Principles and Data Analysis represents my modest attempt to fill such a gap. In this book, I aim to introduce the subject matter to the novice and to help alleviate the confusion in EXAFS data analysis, which, although becoming more and more routine, is still a rather tricky endeavor and may, at times, discourage the beginners.

Unlike other Buddhist texts, the kun byed rgyal po'i mdo invites the reader to rejoice in this world as beautified and intelligible, and thus the innate purity of the intelligent potency, the motherly Buddha, will be experienced. In addition to the translation, the book also includes a discussion of the conceptual and historical contexts of the text, an examination of its leading ideas, and an assessment of the challenges related to the translation.
