This book fills a gap in the literature on environmental sustainability by addressing the topic from the perspective of social and economic development. Progress in understanding and achieving sustainability requires the integration of scientific, social, economic, and legal issues. Yet progress in understanding and achieving sustainability will only be achieved through integration of scientific, social, economic, and legal aspects. A treatise on environmental sustainability should raise the current state of knowledge by proposing and recommending decision-making efforts and breaking new ground with agendas aimed for the younger generation. These younger scientists will be confronted with future uncertainty related to the set of crises that characterise the 21st Century (e.g. ecological, social, food, energy, environmental, climatic, financial, etc.). Currently, there are a number of indicators that demonstrate that ecological conditions are being compromised globally. These include reduced primary productivity, reduction in biological complexity, spreading pollution such as eutrophication, ecological degradation in any continental/basin/coastal/sea ecosystem, reduction in biodiversity, lowered resilience and slow recovery of damaged ecosystems, and reduced ecological integrity. All of these problems are related to social and economic pressure. The challenge for most ecological systems is not only to establish the baseline for current ecosystem conditions, but also to explore options for recovery and sustainability. The latter involves ecological restoration where ecosystem and environmental services are maintained and enhanced. These services are essential to social integration and economic development. This book not only introduces a theoretical and conceptual framework for the topic, but also analyses the uncertainty for sustainability because of dwindling natural resources. It includes contributions providing a basis for public policies, case studies integrating concepts and tools for solutions, and a set of position papers addressing new agenda topics that will shape the 21st century. The book will be useful for researchers, professors and students alike, as well as for all stakeholders from social, economic and academic sectors.

He also realized there were others that knew of the importance and value of this precious cargo he and his crew were asked to protect and deliver to the one person that could complete the cure. He turned his thoughts from the way it was long before he was born into a world where woman devoured men, and focused on the voice of his artificial first officer informing him through his wristband that his anticipated game of chance has started. Poker always was his favorite diversion from the responsibilities the gory world he lives in demands of him.

All of the weapons from the war are not supposed to work anymore. But one still does and the only thing worse than it leaving Virago 4 is its arrival on Earth. Jake's boss worries about alien invasions. Jake is just trying to not get killed today.

His wife, Mae, is an engineer at Photonviz Corporation, a company that builds devices located throughout the solar system that collect photons reflected from deep space originally emitted from Earth. The photons record every event that occurred in Earth’s history. SISAR uses the photon data to create the historical simulations used as the basis for its alternate history simulations. But Dax’s life is torn apart when he returns from an expedition to the ruins of eastern North America to discover Mae, missing. Taken from his world by a man who looks like him. Dax’s search for Mae will uncover incredible truths. But he must first learn the purpose of two mysterious, otherworldly objects whose origin trace back to the time of Christ’s birth. The objects belonged to a strange magus who saved the infant Christ from being killed by the Romans in the Slaughter of the Innocents. They were discovered by archeologists in Costa Rica, in the 21st century, and may be connected to a simulation Dax created—a world inexplicably entwined with his own reality. The novel is hard science fiction and alternate history fiction, in the tradition of books by authors like Philip K. Dick. It is also an adventure, mystery and time travel novel like classic science fiction books written by Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. Themes explored by modern-day writers, including Stephen King, David Mitchell and Blake Crouch, are reimagined in The Designer. The Designer explores the nature of reality. And how myth and religion, theoretical and speculative physics, metaphysics and philosophy can come together to provide possible answers to the fundamental questions about the universe that have vexed human beings for millennia.

This Manual for the implementation of SOPs for EHS has been developed to support the person responsible for the implementation of EHS at the National Locust Control Unit (NLCU). The Manual should facilitate the programming of activities to be carried out, structure the documentation of the state of implementation, and allow relatively easy monitoring of the extent to which the EHS has been achieved by the managers of the NLCU or by third parties. The Manual presents a "model approach" for the implementation of the EHS. However, this approach is flexible and should not be applied too rigorously but adapted to the national situation and the specific organization of NLCU. Computing Risk for Oil Prospects describes how prospect risk assessment — predicting the distribution of financial gains or losses that may result from the drilling of an exploration well — can be done using objective procedures implemented on personal computers. The procedures include analyses of historical data, interpretation of geological and geophysical data, and financial calculations to yield a spectrum of the possible consequences of decisions. All aspects of petroleum risk assessment are covered, from evaluating regional resources, through delineating an individual prospect, to calculation of the financial consequences of alternative decisions and their possible results. The bottom lines are given both in terms of the probable volumes of oil that may be discovered and the expected monetary returns. Statistical procedures are linked with computer mapping and interpretation algorithms, which feed their results directly into routines for financial analysis.
