While written historical references are deficient, vestiges of the common people's lives remain in the cultural landscape, in the minds of people and their way of living. In 2003, the Chinese Xinhua News Agency journalist Wang Jun published the bestseller Beijing Record, the result of ten years of research on the urban transformation of Beijing in the last fifty years. This book is a study of the dual capital system of Ming dynasty China (1368-1644), with a focus on the administrative functions of the auxiliary Southern Capital, Nanjing. It argues that the immense geographical expanse of the Chinese empire and the poor communication infrastructure of pre-modern times necessitated the establishment of an additional capital administration for effective control of the Ming realm. The existence of the Southern Capital, which has been dismissed by scholars as redundant and insignificant, was, the author argues, justified by its ability to assist the primary Northern Capital better control the southern part of the imperial land. The practice of maintaining auxiliary capitals, where the bureaucratic structures of the primary capital were replicated in varying degrees, was a unique and valuable approach to effecting bureaucratic control over vast territory in pre-modern conditions. Nanjing translates into English as "Southern Capital" and Beijing as "Northern Capital".

Machine Learning for Low-Latency Communications presents the principles and practice of various deep learning methodologies for mitigating three critical latency components: access latency, transmission latency, and processing latency. In particular, the book develops learning to estimate methods via algorithm unrolling and multiarmed bandit for reducing access latency by enlarging the number of concurrent transmissions with the same pilot length. Task-oriented learning to compress methods based on information bottleneck are given to reduce the transmission latency via avoiding unnecessary data transmission. Lastly, three learning to optimize methods for processing latency reduction are given which leverage graph neural networks, multi-agent reinforcement learning, and domain knowledge.
