Tumours of the hand are highly varied, their only common feature being their location in an organ in which preservation of sensation and mobility must be our primary concern. Although the subject of numerous studies, they are not well known to the majority of practitioners, as most of these studies deal with only one type of tumour. Now, however, we have a book devoted entirely to these tumours as a whole, with a clear and logical approach to the clini cal features, histology, differential diagnosis and treatment of each type, together with an extensive bibliography. The need for such a work - one I believe to be unique of its kind - has long been felt, for tumours of the hand often raise difficult problems of diagno sis, prognosis and treatment. As regards differential diagnosis, this book is plainly very useful; it can be consulted like a classification. In recent years, diagnosis has been improved by new methods of investigation, such as ther mography, scintigraphy, arteriography and serial angiography, etc. Though very expensive, the use of these sophisticated techniques sometimes proves valuable for the diagnosis of certain bony or vascular tumours that would otherwise be difficult to approach. Such methods should not be overused; when the lesion is easily accessible, biopsy is the correct procedure. In every case, biopsy provides the only certain method of diagnosis, even though histo logical interpretation may be difficult and calls for great experi ence; the penalties of error can be very serious.
Marit Julien investigates the relation between morphology and syntax, or more specifically, the relation between the form of inflected verbs and the position of those verbs. She surveys 530 languages and shows that, with the exception of agreement markers, the positioning of verbal inflectional markers relative to verb stems is compatible with a syntactic approach to morphology.
This volume is the fourth in a series developed under the auspices of the World Federation of Neurology to meet the needs of neurologists who must practice medicine without many of the advantages that are often taken for granted in the industrialized world. 2019 National Jewish Book Award Finalist for Biography. Ben Hecht had seen his share of death-row psychopaths, crooked ward bosses, and Capone gun thugs by the time he had come of age as a crime reporter in gangland Chicago. His grim experience with what he called “the soul of man” gave him a kind of uncanny foresight a decade later, when a loose cannon named Adolf Hitler began to rise to power in central Europe. In 1932, Hecht solidified his legend as "the Shakespeare of Hollywood" with his thriller Scarface, the Howard Hughes epic considered the gangster movie to end all gangster movies. But Hecht rebelled against his Jewish bosses at the movie studios when they refused to make films about the Nazi menace. Leveraging his talents and celebrity connections to orchestrate a spectacular one-man publicity campaign, he mobilized pressure on the Roosevelt administration for an Allied plan to rescue Europe’s Jews. Then after the war, Hecht became notorious, embracing the labels “gangster” and “terrorist” in partnering with the mobster Mickey Cohen to smuggle weapons to Palestine in the fight for a Jewish state. The Notorious Ben Hecht: Iconoclastic Writer and Militant Zionist is a biography of a great twentieth-century writer that treats his activism during the 1940s as the central drama of his life. It details the story of how Hecht earned admiration as a humanitarian and vilification as an extremist at this pivotal moment in history, about the origins of his beliefs in his varied experiences in American media, and about the consequences. Who else but Hecht could have drawn the admiration of Ezra Pound, clowned around with Harpo Marx, written Notorious and Spellbound with Alfred Hitchcock, launched Marlon Brando’s career, ghosted Marilyn Monroe’s memoirs, hosted Jack Kerouac and Salvador Dalí on his television talk show, and plotted revolt with Menachem Begin? Any lover of modern history who follows this journey through the worlds of gangsters, reporters, Jazz Age artists, Hollywood stars, movie moguls, political radicals, and guerrilla fighters will never look at the twentieth century in the same way again.
It is remarkable that until recently sonographic studies of the bowel have not reached the diagnostic level that sonography has attained for other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Gas posed the major ob stacle to obtaining consistent quality results. Julien Puylaert has de veloped a graded-compression technique which is not only able to eliminate gas artifacts, but also - by reducing the distance between the transducer and the bowel - allows the use of high-frequency transducers. Since 1986, when we were barned by his innovative pa per on sonographic evaluation of acute appendicitis, he has demon strated the eminent diagnostic impact of sonography in right lower quadrant pathology in a great number of publications; his excellent diagnostic results have been confirmed by numerous other authors. I have reflected on the conditions that were the basis for this re velatory development in gastrointestinal sonography. The enthusiasm and dedication that Julien Puylaert shows toward diagnostic radiolo gy are unsurpassed. This is a family tradition - his father, Professor Carl Puylaert, is a honorary member of the Radiological Society of North America. Furthermore, the younger Dr. Puylaert has the good fortune to work with associates in the Westeinde Hospital who under stood at an early point what was going on; they made it possible for him to devote much of his time to his beloved subject. Finally, he has always been convinced that the whole sonographic examination should be performed by the radiologist.

Owing to the increased interest in brain ischemia and the new therapeutic options from pharmaceutical companies for the treatment of acute stroke, Professor Julien Bogousslavsky, one of the world's stroke experts, has revised his best-selling book. It is the emergence of huge possibilities in the management of stroke - ultra-early diagnosis, intensive care, surgical and other interventional therapies, thrombolysis, anti-ischemic drugs and prevention of immediate recurrence - which necessiates this timely update.

As European Union (EU) Member States seek to counteract base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS) practices while avoiding new obstacles to the EU’s internal market such as double taxation, the credit method, also known as the foreign tax credit, is one of the essential tools in this balancing act, yet it is one that has given rise to various EU law challenges and questions. This invaluable book – the first in-depth study of the EU law constraints on designing the credit method – delineates the EU law boundaries within which the Member States must operate when they implement this method of tax relief. For the first time, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) cases that may affect, directly or indirectly, the credit method and its main components are systematically identified and analysed in order to extract the legal findings and principles that define the contours within which the Member States can manoeuvre when considering EU-compatible approaches to the credit method. To this end, among others, this book offers: an extensive study of the historical legal developments of the credit method; an overview of the key design features of the credit method, considering the optional, variable components, such as the credit limitation (maximum creditable amount), that tailor it to different legal and policy considerations; an analysis of the legal constraints on the key features of the credit method flowing from CJEU case law on the fundamental freedoms, considering the impact of landmark cases and concepts (e.g., Schumacker, neutralization); the EU law implications based on the type of credit method (direct, indirect, imputation) and the feature of the credit method (e.g., credit limitation, credit carryforward); and examples to clearly and concisely illustrate the basic operation of the credit method and some of the main calculation and EU law issues. The author’s doctoral dissertation, on which the book is based, was awarded the Wolfgang Gassner Science Prize 2020 and the European Doctoral Tax Thesis Award 2020. As a timely, comprehensive and practical study of the relationship between the credit method and EU law, this book will be welcomed by lawyers and other professionals working with taxation matters, as well as by tax policymakers and academics in the fields of international and European tax law.
Following the mysterious disappearance of the La Pérouse expedition after it sailed out of Botany Bay in 1788, the French botanist Jacques-Julien Houtou de Labillardière (1755-1834) took part in the search that departed in 1791 from Brest in two ships, Recherche and Espérance. In the space of three years, the expedition's naturalists collected numerous specimens, with Labillardière focusing on Australian flora, but their missing countrymen were never found. Notwithstanding the later confiscation of the scientific collections by the British - Sir Joseph Banks helped to secure their return - Labillardière was able to publish this narrative to great acclaim in 1800. Reissued here is the English translation of the same year, complete with a volume of finely engraved plates. The work is especially notable for its descriptions and illustrations of the indigenous peoples of Australasia. This volume of illustrations contains more than forty plates depicting people, artefacts, plants and animals.--
