She tells of the preparations of the soldiers leading up to the battle, the desperate hand-to-hand fighting, and the suffering endured from continual bombings. She also shows the extent of the men's despair at the allied surrender, the many subsequent daring escapes as well as the terrible years of incarceration for those who were captured and imprisoned. Many of the heart-rending accounts of the battle are told here for the first time, providing a unique eyewitness take on this forgotten corner of World War II.

This book examines the business of charity - including fundraising, marketing, branding, financial accountability and the nexus of benevolence, politics and capitalism - in Britain from the development of the British Red Cross in 1870 to 1912. Whilst most studies focus on the distribution of charity, Sarah Roddy, Julie-Marie Strange and Bertrand Taithe look at the roots of the modern third sector, exploring how charities appropriated features more readily associated with commercial enterprises in order to compete and obtain money, manage and account for that money and monetize compassion. Drawing on a wide range of archival research from Charity Organization Societies, Wood Street Mission, Salvation Army, League of Help and Jewish Soup Kitchen, among many others, The Charity Market and Humanitarianism in Britain, 1870-1912 sheds new light on the history of philanthropy in the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

The criminal justice system has morphed from a harshly punitive system to a distinctively more rehabilitative and restorative one focusing on supporting victims and changing offender behavior. A variety of collaborative actors from police, courts, and corrections partner with social workers, psychologists, and community members who rely heavily on a civil law approach similar to alternative dispute resolution (ADR). While much of these innovations within criminal justice have been evolving over the last several decades, students in criminal justice programs rarely hear much, if anything, about them. This textbook seeks to address these gaps in the literature through the traditional Criminal Justice Ethics course with a case study approach. It will explore the typical subjects taught in a Criminal Justice Ethics course including the concepts of virtues, duties, ethical dilemmas, ethical systems, moral reasoning, police ethics, ethical issues in the courts, ethics within institutional and community corrections, and the ethical treatment of juveniles. In addition, the book addresses the concepts of administrative ethics, justice, comparative and international justice, humanitarian law and punishment, and corporate misconduct. Each chapter provides definitions for the terms that are being introduced, along with examples, and a variety of ethical dilemmas to work through as case studies.

Constitutional considerations of protective laws for women were the analytical battlefield on which the legal community reworked the balance between private liberty and the state's authority to regulate. Julie Novkov focuses on the importance of gender as an analytical category for the legal system. During the Progressive Era and New Deal, courts often invalidated generalized protective legislation, but frequently upheld measures that limited women's terms and conditions of labor. The book explores the reasoning in such cases that were decided between 1873 and 1937. By analyzing all reported opinion on the state and federal level, as well as materials from the women's movement and briefs filed in the U.S. Supreme Court, the study demonstrates that considerations of cases involving women's measures ultimately came to drive the development of doctrine. The study combines historical institutionalism and feminism to address constitutional interpretation, showing that an analysis of conflict over the meaning of legal categories provides a deeper understanding of constitutional development. In doing so, it rejects purely political interpretations of the so-called Lochner era, in which the courts invalidated many legislative efforts to ameliorate the worst effects of capitalism. By addressing the dynamic interactions among interested laypersons, attorneys, and judges, it demonstrates that no individuals or institutions have complete control over the generation of constitutional meaning.
