Mrs. Juliana Horatia Ewing, nee Gatty, (1841-1885) was a writer of childrenas stories, daughter of The Rev. Alfred Gatty and Margaret Gatty, also a writer for children. Among her tales, which have hardly been excelled in sympathetic insight into childlife, and still enjoy undiminished popularity, are Mrs. Overthewayas Remembrances (1869), A Flat Iron for a Farthing (1873), Jan of the Windmill (1873), Jackanapes, Daddy Darwinas Dovecot and Other Stories (1879), We and the World (1881), Old-Fashioned Fairy Tales (1882) and The Story of a Short Life (1885).
This selection of writings by twenty-nine women, known and unknown, professional and amateur, presents a unique portrait of Canada through time and space, from the seventeenth to the early twentieth centuries, from the Maritimes to British Columbia and the Far North. There is a range of voices from high-born wives of governors general, to an Icelandic immigrant and a fisherman’s wife in Labrador. A Loyalist wife and mother describes the first hard weather in New Brunswick, a seasick nun tells of a dangerous voyage out from France, a famous children’s writer writes home about the fun of canoeing, and a German general’s wife describes habitant customs. All demonstrate how women’s experiences not only shared, but helped shape this new country.
Aged 26 and newly married, Juliana Ewing left England in 1867, boundfor Fredericton, New Brunswick, where her husband had been posted tothe army garrison. A famed children's writer and skilful artist,Juliana used her talents in chronicling for her family in Yorkshire herday-to-day experiences in the maritime city from Confederation to thewithdrawal of British troops in 1869. In 101 letters, reproduced almostin their entirety, Juliana recreates the 'high colonial'society of mid-nineteenth-century Fredericton. Her lettersunconsciously also reveal herself -- her courage, intelligence, gaityand, above all, her loving nature. Witty, perceptive, and dramatic, herletters reflect her ability as a prose writer of unusual sensibility.
