According to one of Julia Margaret Cameron’s great-nieces, “we never knew what Aunt Julia was going to do next, nor did anyone else.” This is an accurate summation of the life of the British photographer (1815–1879), who took up the camera at age forty-eight and made more than twelve hundred images during a fourteen-year career. Living at the height of the Victorian era, Cameron was anything but conventional, experimenting with the relatively new medium of photography, promoting her own art though exhibition and sale, and pursuing the eminent personalities of her age—Alfred Tennyson, Charles Darwin, Thomas Carlyle, and others—as subjects for her lens. For the first time, all known images by Cameron, one of the most important nineteenth-century artists in any medium, are gathered together in a catalogue raisonné. In addition to a complete catalogue of Cameron’s photographs, there is information on her life and times, initial experiments, artistic aspirations, techniques, small-format images, albums, commercial strategies, sitters, and sources of inspiration. Also provided are a selected bibliography of publications on Cameron, a list of exhibitions of her work held both in her time as well as our own, and a summary of important collections where her pictures can be found.

SHADOW ON THE SUN" is the novel which begins the whole saga that is THE HANFORD TRILOGY. It takes as its premise the fact that the nuclear power disaster that became "Chernobyl," near the Ukrainian city of Pripyat is as nothing compared to the 670 square miles that is Hanford, part of America's Washington State that skirts along the US Northwestern seaboard. For the last seventy years Hanford became one of the most radioactively polluted places on Earth subsequent to producing the first atomic bomb during the second world war it subsequently became for the next seventy years an enormous manufacturing complex comprising 900 support buildings, radiological laboratories, 177 vast effluent containing tanks and, nine plutonium producing reactors together with some 230,000 people living in the close by tri city towns of Kennewick, Pasco and Richland many of whom were employed on the site. In the 40 years since production began Hanford's purpose was to supply plutonium used in the majority of the 60,000 weapons used by the US military for its Cold War nuclear stockpile. In its time of operation Hanford produced a 63 tons of plutonium, enough to have been carried by a single, articulated lorry. Along the production way a lethal waste was also produced. By and large it is still present despite billions of dollars expended by various Federal Government agencies to clean up the mess left behind after the site was eventually shut down in the Sixties and Seventies.To make matters worse Hanford sits close to an earthquake zone known as The Cascades containing Mt St Helens and which as recently as 1980 blew its top. Geologists predict it is only as a matter of time before another earthquake occurs causing devastation far worse than the fault zone known as the San Andreas ever could. That same fault line that could cause so much devastation in Washington State also stretches across the Pacific. On the 11th March, 2011 in Japan it caused one of the country's worst earthquakes and tsunamis by wrecking its Fukushima nuclear power plant whose safety devices proved totally inadequate to deal with what confronted them. But this awesome Hanford background is merely the source for the three novels comprising the "Hanford Trilogy", three novels where each is responsible for its own, separate fictional story line reaching their conclusions in the latest and concluding novel, BRIGHTSTAR.
