Through the study of Indigenous literary and artistic practices from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, Julia V. This book is devoted to the study of the bilingual “parallel poems” of Ludwig Strauss (Aachen 1892 ˗ Jerusalem 1953) created between 1934 and 1952 in Palestine/Israel and which exist in two variants, a Hebrew and a German version, one of which is the original and the other a self-translation. The aim of this study is to compare the versions and their interpretation based on Strauss’s theoretical essays on poetry and translation, his political writings and works of literary criticism. Special attention is paid to Strauss’s concept (linked with the idea of messianic redemption) of poetry as a “fore-image” of a future true community of men and as “the earthly expression of the Absolute” directed at interpreting divine revelation and its “translation” into human language. In examining Strauss’s experiments with self-translation, by which he aimed at establishing a dialogue between languages, and between people and nations, this study considers the two processes of translation: from divine speech into human language and from one human language into another.

This book explores the memorializing practices of American veterans of the Vietnam War at several of the most significant contemporary sites of memory in the United States and Vietnam. These sites include veterans' memoirs, museum exhibits, replicas of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and tourism to Vietnam. Because war memorializing has, since the late 1960s, shifted focus from national soul searching to personal identity and recovery, I emphasize how contemporary narratives of the war, shaped more by memory than by history, often are detached from the specific history of the war and its political controversies. Drawing on trauma and cultural memory scholarship, as well as empirical data gathered during field research in the U.S. and Vietnam, the author examines how veterans' memorializing practices have become increasingly individualized, commodified, and conservative since the early 1980s.
Policymakers worldwide draft privacy laws to increase user privacy by imposing strict legal requirements. At the same time, policymakers grant websites a degree of freedom in implementing these requirements. However, the effects of privacy laws and the granted implementation freedom on websites and users remain unclear. Yet, when drafting privacy laws, policymakers need to trade-off between increasing user privacy and limiting the harm to websites’ ability to earn revenue with the collected user data. Similarly, websites need to anticipate such effects, e.g., on their revenues, when deciding how to implement privacy laws. This dissertation encompasses three articles to shed light on the effects of privacy laws and their granted implementation freedom on websites’ revenues and user privacy, using the enforcement of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The articles show that while the GDPR has average negative effects on websites’ revenues, these effects vary across websites’ chosen implementation of GPDR. The dissertation further shows that the different implementations of the legal requirements impact user privacy. Thereby, this dissertation provides an empirical foundation of privacy laws’ effects on websites’ revenues and user privacy, aiding policymakers in evaluating or drafting privacy laws and websites in deciding how to implement them.
In movies about landmark historical events such as wars, occupations, or migrations or historically important personalities, there is an unspoken set of rules for how gender ought to be expressed. Often condemned by critics for being excessively emotional or pathetic, films by female directors featuring female protagonists may be popular with audiences but judged incapable of expressing 'real' history. Audiences learn more about the past from movies than from any other form of entertainment, and historical and heritage cinemas now comprise a burgeoning scholarly field. Yet to date there has not been a book-length analysis of female film directors' innovations in films about the historical past. With and without critical recognition, women are making important stories about the past and bringing new representations of agency and activism to the screen, often construed in ways that mobilise the past for the present, and always filtered through the lens of contemporary feminisms. Julia Erhart's new book situates women filmmakers' work within a context of other women directors from France, Denmark, Iran, Australia, the UK, the United States, and Spain and draws connections between their representational strategies and their concerns with visioning the past within the prism of the present. Written in an approachable yet theoretically informed prose, Erhart compellingly explores how foundational historiographic concepts like valour, memory, and resistance are re-envisioned within uniquely revised sub-genres that include biopics, historical documentaries, Holocaust movies, and films about the 'War on Terror'.
