One tribe’s traditional knowledge of plants, presented for the first time Residents of the Great Plains since the early 1500s, the Apache people were well acquainted with the native flora of the region. In Plains Apache Ethnobotany, Julia A. Jordan documents more than 110 plant species valued by the Plains Apache and preserves a wealth of detail concerning traditional Apache collection, preparation, and use of these plant species for food, medicine, ritual, and material culture. The traditional Apache economy centered on hunting, gathering, and trading with other tribes. Throughout their long history the Apache lived in or traveled to many different parts of the plains, gaining an intimate knowledge of a wide variety of plant resources. Part of this traditional knowledge, especially that pertaining to plants of Oklahoma, has been captured here by Jordan’s fieldwork, conducted with elders of the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma in the mid-1960s, a time when much traditional knowledge was being lost. Plains Apache Ethnobotany is the most comprehensive ethnobotanical study of a southern plains tribe. Handsomely illustrated, this book is a valuable resource for ethnobotanists, anthropologists, historians, and anyone interested in American Indian use of native plants.

In this dissertation new constant mean curvature surfaces in homogeneous 3-manifolds are constructed. They arise as sister surfaces of Plateau solutions. The first example, a two-parameter family of MC H surfaces in ∑(k) x R with H ∈ [0,1/2] and k + 4H2 ≤ 0, has genus 0,2 k ends and k-fold dihedral symmetry, k ≥ 2. The existence of the minimal sister follows from the construction of a mean convex domain. The projection of the domain is non-convex. The second example is an MC 1/2 surface in H2 ∈ R with k ends, genus 1 and k-fold dihedral symmetry, k ≥ 3. One has to solve two period problems in the construction. The first period guarantees that the surface has exactly one horizontal symmetry. For the second period the control of a horizontal mirror curve proves the dihedral symmetry. For H=1/2 all surfaces are Alexandrov-embedded.

The Paris Agreement embodies a flexible approach to global cooperation, aimed at encouraging ever more ambitious climate action by a variety of players on all levels of governance. Regional organizations play an important role in mobilizing such action. This Element provides novel insights into the conditions under which policy entrepreneurs can bring about transformative policy change in regional settings, with a focus on the European Union (EU) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). It finds that opportunity structures in the EU have been conducive to successful climate-progressive policy entrepreneurship at several key junctures, but not consistently. In contrast, the ASEAN governance context provides few access points for non-elite interests, making it fiendishly difficult for policy entrepreneurs to push for substantive policy change in the face of powerful domestic veto players.
