Over the past 30 years, many social psychologists have been critical of the practice of using incentive systems in business, education, and other applied settings. The concern is that money, high grades, prizes, and even praise may be effective in getting people to perform an activity but performance and interest are maintained only so long as the reward keeps coming. Once the reward is withdrawn, the concern is that individuals will enjoy the activity less, perform at a lower level, and spend less time on the task. The claim is that rewards destroy people's intrinsic motivation. Widely accepted, this view has been enormously influential and has led many employers, teachers, and other practitioners to question the use of rewards and incentive systems in applied settings. Contrary to this view, the research by Cameron and Pierce indicates that rewards can be used effectively to enhance interest and performance. The book centers around the debate on rewards and intrinsic motivation. Based on historical, narrative, and meta-analytic reviews, Cameron and Pierce show that, contrary to many claims, rewards do not have pervasive negative effects. Instead, the authors show that careful arrangement of rewards enhances motivation, performance, and interest. The overall goal of the book is to draw together over 30 years of research on rewards, motivation, and performance and to provide practitioners with techniques for designing effective incentive systems.

Meg likes to plan her life on a spreadsheet. Tania believes in letting the universe take charge. Theirs is an unlikely friendship, to say the least – especially since the two met because they used to date the same guy. At the same time. Now, as older, wiser twenty-nine-year olds (and flatmates, no less), they’re determined to enter their thirties with the one thing that''s still missing from their halfway happy lives: that elusive long-lasting romance. When a routine conversation ends up with them laying bets on who will find love first, the battle lines are drawn. Now, if only ridiculous first dates, nosey aunties betting on their bet and complicated professional lives would get out of their way for the girls to find their One. And, really, what is the shortest way to finding love – via probability calculations on a-date-a-day week, or just being in the right place at the right time when the planets are all aligned and there are no Venus–Uranus oppositions?

For centuries, the "great man" format and masculine discourse of biography and autobiography have eclipsed women. If we accept this history, we remain ignorant of "Lady Sarashina," a Japanese woman of the Han period, whose book survives from the 11th century. We overlook Margaret Cavendish and Dame Julian, two early English autobiographers. And we fail to consider sufficiently slave narratives, oral histories, or lesbian "coming out" stories. Telling Women's Lives assesses existing traditions of autobiography and biography in search of a method capable of conveying the distinctive content of women's lives while retaining the tenor of feminine subjectivity. Drawing on feminist research methodologies of the past two decades as well as anthropology and sociology, Long paves the way for the formulation of an emergent feminist methodology for telling women's lives. This highly original study seeks to revise and recreate the genre so as to accommodate a feminine discourse, narrator, reader, and subject. The "messiness" of women's lives-the daily work and detail that men have programmatically excluded-acquires new meaning as Long develops here an innovative theory of sociobiography.

When Lisa McGregor arrived at her mother's farm, she was happy to be home for the holidays. Christmas in the Texas Panhandle meant blustery winds, cozy fires and an occasional snowflake. But this year the season was accompanied by a sudden winter storm with deep snow drifts that closed local roads and brought an unexpected knock at the door. Bracing herself against the cold, Lisa immediately recognized the dark blue eyes and ruggedly handsome face of Ryan Hall, her ex-husband. The passion they'd share was still alive, though more than a year had passed since their divorce, when they'd been torn apart by two very different worlds. A country girl at heart, Lisa had felt out of place amidst the cocktail parties and elegant mansions of Ryan's life. And Ryan hadn't been unable to accept his spunky wife was so unlike other society brides. But with her red-brown curls falling down her back and her hazel eyes sparkling, Lisa still set his heart afire- even in the middle of a blizzard. The business world had taught Ryan that everything in life had a price- everything except the one thing he wanted the most...the love of Lisa McGregor.

In this book, Judy Kutulas complicates the common view that the 1970s were a time of counterrevolution against the radical activities and attitudes of the previous decade. Instead, Kutulas argues that the experiences and attitudes that were radical in the 1960s were becoming part of mainstream culture in the 1970s, as sexual freedom, gender equality, and more complex notions of identity, work, and family were normalized through popular culture--television, movies, music, political causes, and the emergence of new communities. Seemingly mundane things like watching The Mary Tyler Moore Show, listening to Carole King songs, donning Birkenstock sandals, or reading Roots were actually critical in shaping Americans' perceptions of themselves, their families, and their relation to authority. Even as these cultural shifts eventually gave way to a backlash of political and economic conservatism, Kutulas shows that what critics perceive as the narcissism of the 1970s was actually the next logical step in a longer process of assimilating 1960s values like individuality and diversity into everyday life. Exploring such issues as feminism, sexuality, and race, Kutulas demonstrates how popular culture helped many Americans make sense of key transformations in U.S. economics, society, politics, and culture in the late twentieth century.
