She prayed now to the wise and powerful Tsui-Goab, the Khoi supreme god, to protect her from Guanab, the cunning god of evil. Her grandmother had warned that this was an evil love, brought about by the trickster god, Haitsa-Aibib. Haitsa-Aibib could change his form at will. Was he the fish eagle that had thrown the cloud over her? Lt. Ian Bentley sat his horse on a hill overlooking the coastal foothills of the Amatola Mountains. From his position, he had a good view of the sea and also the Xhosa village below him. It was baking hot under the African sun, and he looked forward to the cool evening. He sweated in his thick red tunic, made for cooler climates, and his horse fidgeted from the flies. Taking his eyeglass from his tunic, he focused on the village below. Conraad du Randt, the burghers leader, raised his arm for silence. Yes, my people. First, they free the slaves and tell us to pay them. Now they have equality before the law? Thunderous applause and cheers echoed throughout the conference hall at the European Union quarters in Brussels. Like most Christians, Thomas believed that the signing of the seven-year peace treaty would not take place until after the biblical rapture. In desperation, Thomas cries out to God as to why he was left behind. To his astonishment, he later learns that the rapture hadn't happened yet! With his adult son's help, Thomas comes to the conclusion that the seven-year tribulation must have begun at the time of the peace signing with Israel. In desperation, Thomas restores his broken marriage and moves his family, along with a small group of people to the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan. He finds refuge at a forgotten, old abandoned settlement, which he and Scott had accidently discovered prior to the peace agreement. Miraculously, the buildings were still all intact. They were even filled with personal belongings, which had not been touched by human hands since the 1800s. Thomas felt led by God to bring his people to the Keweenaw, so they could take refuge from the tribulation and the diabolic Antichrist. Life is a struggle for the nineteen settlers as they live much like the pioneers of olden days. Besides the day-to-day struggles for survival, there were romantic conflicts, new relationships, and catastrophes. Nevertheless, the new members of Old Town put their faith in God's hands in the cold, rugged hills of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

My parents were great influences in my life. From my mom, I learned optimism. I never saw my mom in a bad mood. She was always happy and looked at the good side of everyone and everything. When she wanted a fireplace, she substituted as a mail carrier and after a year, was able to buy it. Once when thinking she and Dad might get a new car, a fire prevented it. Dad was a logger, and the logs on the cold deck of the lumber mill had burned up, which prevented him from paying his workers with the money he would have received. Neither parent mentioned it to us kids, and nothing changed in their behavior. They never talked to us kids about money, having it or not having it. Mom cooked, sewed our clothes, painted the walls inside our home, and always found a way to make something out of nothing. Our parents took in an AFS student: Olga, Job Corps girls, Japanese students, and others, which had a big influence on me. I remember her sending packages to her pen pals in Europe after WWII. Family was the most important to her. Mom took us to visit her parents and their siblings and her siblings. We learned stories about all of them. We lived minutes from my father's family and got to know and love them, too. So many stories to tell. In fact, when my little granddaughter, Natasha, spent the night with me, she always asked for the stories. What fun! She always asked for the stories about the people (the relatives).
