Judith Weinshall Liberman, best known for her Holocaust-themed artwork, explores the creative process in this collection of three plays, a libretto, and black-and-white reproductions of twenty-five of her original artworks. The plays and libretto are all semi-autobiographical and express insights about writing and art that shes gained through half a century of honing her craft. In Soul Mate, which was inspired by Libermans collaboration with a gifted young composer on her first musical play, a woman in her eighties struggles to accept constructive criticism, and in the process discovers that her mentor is her soul mate. Vincents Visit tells the story of an elderly artist visited by Vincent Van Gogh, whos been dead for more than a century. Judith and Anne dramatizes an encounter between the playwright and Anne Frank. To Be an Artist integrates elements from Vincents Visit and Judith and Anne into a musical play in which the characters express themselves through frank dialogue and in twenty lyrics that provide insight into their minds and hearts. Reproductions of artwork help readers better understand the themes in each work as well as the authors insight into On Being an Artist.
The four plays in this collection were all written after Judith Weinshall Liberman reached her eighties. One play, EMPATHY, was inspired by a period in the playwright's life, when her husband, then only 52, suffered a stroke which rendered him unable to play the piano and led to his severe depression. The other three plays - GOOD OLD ABRAHAM, MICHAL and SISERA'S MOTHER - were inspired by Old Testament stories which the playwright studied in elementary school in her native Israel but upon which she bestows, in her plays, a mature perspective that raises questions relevant to our times.
Judith Weinshall Liberman wrote THE VERY OLD PAINTER AND HER HUSBAND in the 1990s, but it was not until 2012 that she first published the story. In 2013, she decided to publish the story as a picture book. The book tells the tale of a woman artist who expresses her feelings about the human condition through her paintings, and of her devoted husband, who appreciates the importance of her artworks. The husband tries to bring his wife's art to the attention of others, but his efforts are unsuccessful. It is only after the painter's death, as the public becomes aware of the monetary value of her art, that interest in her paintings becomes widespread. The husband's reaction to the public's sudden interest in the painter's artworks provides a surprise ending. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Born in Israel (then called "Palestine"), Judith Weinshall Liberman came to the United States in 1947 to pursue higher education. She earned four American university degrees, including two in law. After settling in the Boston area in 1956, she studied art and creative writing. Beginning in the early 1960s, and for four decades thereafter, Ms. Liberman created numerous series of artworks. Her art has been widely exhibited, and is represented in the collection of museums and other public institutions. During her long career in visual art, Ms. Liberman wrote and published several books, among them some children's books. Her book THE BIRD'S LAST SONG (Addison-Wesley, 1976), which she wrote and illustrated, won a citation as one of the "fabulous books of the year." In 2012, she published her second children's book, ICE CREAM SNOW (Dog Ear Publishing), which she also illustrated, and in 2013 her third, THE LITTLE FAIRY (illustrated by Gail Davis, Dog Ear Publishing). Judith Weinshall Liberman's archives can be found in the Arts Department of the Boston Public Library and at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR In 2013, Judith Weinshall Liberman decided that her story THE VERY OLD PAINTER AND HER HUSBAND would make a meaningful picture book if properly illustrated. Since she did not feel that, in light of her deteriorated eyesight, she could do justice to illustrating the book herself, she selected a fine artist, Ms. Gail Davis, to create the illustrations under the author's guidance. The two had previously collaborated on THE LITTLE FAIRY (Dog Ear Publishing, 2013). Since THE VERY OLD PAINTER AND HER HUSBAND was semi-autobiographical, it was clear to both the author and the illustrator that it would be important to feature the author's own paintings as part of the illustrations, and thus introduce readers to Judith Weinshall Liberman's art. Ms. Davis' illustrations for THE VERY OLD PAINTER AND HER HUSBAND not only skillfully integrate the author's paintings into the illustrations, but also delightfully capture the spirit of the story and of the characters.
PASSION presents a collection of 150 poems and lyrics written by Judith Weinshall Liberman during 2012. This collection is a sequel to REFLECTIONS, her previous anthology of poems, lyrics, and stories, created with her daughter, Dr. Laura Liberman. Illustrated with photographs that highlight some of the people depicted in the verses, this collection covers a wide array of topics arranged in categories from love and relationships to looking back and remembering. Some of the writings are humorous, while others are somber. From the poignancy of First Love to the heartbreak of Losing a Sibling, Liberman captures the essence of what we feel when these changes occur in our lives. Like life itself, PASSION covers the whole gamut of human experience. Two-Way Street Somewhere along the line I learned Loves not a one-way street, For if you take but do not give, Youll end up in defeat. So dont forget to give your love To those of whom youre fond. For true love is a two-way street. Your love will seal your bond.

Yet when she falls asleep, she dreams about searching for her ancestors at various times and places in history. Using one of his magic tricks to select a book at the library, he is surprised - and delighted - to see a live little fairy emerging from the book. Taking the book home, he hopes to spend quality time getting to know the little fairy, but the reaction of members of his family frustrates his plans. ABOUT THE BOOK This book presents spectacular color photographs, each appearing side by side with its desaturated, gray version, thus demonstrating in a clear visual form the richness that color contributes to our universe. The story-poem that connects the photographs in this book is based on a lyric that Judith Weinshall Liberman wrote for her musical play TO BE AN ARTIST, which was published in her book ON BEING AN ARTIST: Three Plays and a Libretto (iUniverse, 2012). The musical includes an encounter between Judith, herself a visual artist, and the noted artist Vincent van Gogh, during which van Gogh sings a hymn to color while conjuring up a dull world that is all gray. This book is a visual presentation of van Gogh's - and the author's - hymn to color in our world. In REFLECTIONS, the authors reflect on their lives and the people they have known. The poems, lyrics, and stories in REFLECTIONS cover a wide range of topics, and are arranged in about a dozen categories. Some writings are humorous, while others are somber. All come from the authors heart. Like life itself, REFLECTIONS covers the whole gamut of human experience.
ABOUT THE BOOK MIRIAM'S DIARY tells the story of a Jewish girl who came to the United States from Palestine in 1947, before the establishment of the State of Israel, to study at a university. The goal of her studies was to enable her to eventually return to her homeland equipped with the knowledge and perspective required for her to be of service to her country. From her diary, we learn about her feelings of alienation while attending college in America and about her concern for her loved ones back home. By tracking the events happening in her homeland before, during, and after the establishment of the State of Israel, her diary allows us to see the birth of Israel from the point of view of someone who went through it while living thousands of miles away. The book leads us through Miriam's emotional turmoil and to her decision to return prematurely to her country. MIRIAM'S DIARY is a must-read for anyone interested in an intimate view of the struggle for the establishment of the State of Israel.
