For centuries, the Catholic Church around the world insisted it had a right to provide and organize its own schools. It decreed also that while nation states could lay down standards for secular curricula, pedagogy, and accommodation, Catholic parents should send their children to Catholic schools and be able to do so without suffering undue financial disadvantage. Thus, from the Pope down, the Church expressed deep opposition to increasing state intervention in schooling, especially during the nineteenth century. By the end of the 1920s however, it was satisfied with the school system in only a small number of countries. Ireland was one of those. There, the majority of primary and secondary schools were Catholic schools. The State left their management in the hands of clerics while simultaneously accepting financial responsibility for maintenance and teachers' salaries. During the period 1922-1967, the Church, unhindered by the State, promoted within the schools' practices aimed at 'the salvation of souls' and at the reproduction of a loyal middle class and clerics. The State supported that arrangement with the Church also acting on its behalf in aiming to produce a literate and numerate citizenry, in pursuing nation building, and in ensuring the preparation of an adequate number of secondary school graduates to address the needs of the public service and the professions. All of that took place at a financial cost much lower than the provision of a totally State-funded system of schooling would have entailed. Fictions of Advice historicizes the late medieval mirrors (or handbooks) for princes to reveal how the ambiguities and contradictions characteristic of the genre are responses to—as well as attempts to manage—the risks implicit in advising a king. Often thought of as moralizing advice unable to engage political conflicts, the mirrors for princes have been taken for dull and conventionalized testimonies to the medieval taste for platitude. Judith Ferster maintains that advice was at the center of one of the important political debates in the late Middle Ages: how to constrain the king and allow for his subjects' participation. Fictions of Advice rereads the English mirrors for princes to show how their moralizing was often highly topical and even subversive. Although overtly deferential to the rulers they address, the mirrors' authors were surprisingly capable of criticism and opposition. In putting the texts back into their historical contexts, Ferster reveals the vital cultural and political function they fulfilled in their societies.

This history of the origin, evolution, and demise of the Greenville Women's College (1854-1961), a small, underfunded Baptist institution in upstate South Carolina, traces its beginnings from a female academy through its organization by the South Carolina Baptist Convention, its struggle for survival and improvement during the years after the Civil War, to its rising aspirations and drive for accreditation in the 1920s. Unendowed and unable to withstand the financial turmoil of the Great Depression, it was forced to merge with nearby Furman University in the 1930s, but it endured as a coordinate college until 1961 when its students joined the men at Furman at a new coeducational campus. This book, the first history of the college, provides the missing half of Furman University's history. A social and institutional history, it focuses on Southern women's changing collegiate experience and the college's relationship to the South Carolina Baptist Convention. It emphasizes the changing nature of student life, examines the role of South Carolina Baptists in the college, and examines the impact of the accreditation movement.

The global spread of plant species by humans is both a fascinating large scale experiment and, in many cases, a major perturbation to native plant communities. By 1600, most brewers in London were male, and men also dominated the trade in many towns and villages.
