The role that gender plays in determining the experience of those caught up in armed conflict has long been overlooked. Moreover, the extent to which gender influences the international legal regime designed to address the humanitarian problems arising from armed conflict has similarly been ignored. In the early 1990s, prompted by extensive media coverage of the rape of women during the conflict in Bosnia Herzegovina, the international community was forced to critically examine the capacity of international law to respond to such crimes. The prevalence of sexual violence, is, however, merely one aspect of the distinctive impact of conflict on women. Although a range of factors influence the way individual women experience armed conflict, the endemic gender discrimination that exists in all societies is a common theme: from Cambodia, where women land-mine victims are less likely to receive treatment for their injuries than are men; to South Africa, where women widowed during the Apartheid years have become outcasts in their own society. To date, the extent to which international law addresses the myriad of ways in which women are affected by armed conflict has received little attention. This work takes the experience of women of armed conflict, matches it with existing provisions of international law, and investigates reasons for the silence of the latter in relation to these events for women. It is the first broad-based critique of international humanitarian law from a gender perspective. The contribution of the United Nations, through its focus on human rights, to improving the protection of women in armed conflict is also considered. The authors underscore the need for new approaches to the issue of women and armed conflict, and canvass a range of options for moving forward.
The prospect of caring for elderly relatives who may be too old, fragile, or forgetful to manage on their own looms large for millions of women and men who are unprepared for the difficulties such an experience can bring. Written by a daughter of aging parents, this book takes an honest, unflinching look at aging in America, weaving together personal stories with current medical information to trace exactly how social and health care policies are affecting daily lives. Judith Steinberg Turiel addresses such topics as healthy aging and independent living; mental impairment brought on by Alzheimer's, other dementias, and depression; women as caregivers; health care rationing; the power of prescription drug makers; end-of-life care; and prospects for Medicare. Her book clearly demonstrates the pressing need for quality health care for people of all ages—through universal, publicly funded health insurance.
With growing affluence in the developed world, food has become an increasing focus for attention. Here, the authors argue that in order to understand the extensive and dramatic developments in the world of food, a new interdisciplinary approach is necessary. The Age of Affluence successfully addresses food consumption in this way. The volume: * argues the importance of socioeconomic and cultural factors over diet, in influencing the production, marketing and consumption of different groups of foods; * places food systems theory on sound analytical foundations; * draws critically upon food systems literature; * includes case studies from the sugar, dairy and meat systems; * employs novel statistical techniques to identify and explain distinct patterns of food consumption; The book will help to revitalize the discipline of food studies and points the way forward for the continuing study of food consumption. As such, it will be invaluable to students, researchers and policymakers engaged in the world of food.
Here are stories to challenge the readers mind and heart. Youve survived the wilderness, but can you survive civilization? Is there someone for everyone? Will you grab your dream or destroy it? Who will you sacrifice to fulfill your ambitions? Four from Wishes is a collection of three short stories and a novella. In each, a woman reaches a point of decision. What she decides will determine, not only her own happiness, but also the happiness or even survival of another. In The Edge of the World, set in the nineteenth century, a young woman tells how she and a small group of women and children survived alone on an island in the South Pacific. What she leaves out of her tale becomes more compelling than what she includes. Tired of waiting for the perfect love, a woman of the very near future takes matters into her own hands. With Satisfaction Guaranteed, the outcome will depend on a stranger knowing her even better than she knows herself. The Dreamer and the Dream begins with a routine police call. However, in futuristic New York City, routine calls can end with elevators full of snakes or stairwells full of dinosaurs. Officer Washington finds herself sorting out dreams from nightmares. Battle, the collections novella, is the story of Caroline and Elizabeth. Caroline is a technician in a facility funded by a government eager to improve its citizens. Elizabeth is a prisoner, an unwilling participant in the facilitys genetic experiments. Knowledge, ambition, honor, and humanity become weapons as the women battle for their lives and futures.
