Speaking about Chinese writing entails thinking about how writing speaks through various media. In the guises of the written character and its imprints, traces, or ruins, writing is more than textuality. The goal of this volume is to consider the relationship of writing to materiality in China’s literary history and to ponder the physical aspects of the production and circulation of writing. To speak of the thing-ness of writing is to understand it as a thing in constant motion, transported from one place or time to another, one genre or medium to another, one person or public to another. Thinking about writing as the material product of a culture shifts the emphasis from the author as the creator and ultimate arbiter of a text’s meaning to the editors, publishers, collectors, and readers through whose hands a text is reshaped, disseminated, and given new meanings. By yoking writing and materiality, the contributors to this volume aim to bypass the tendency to oppose form and content, words and things, documents and artifacts, to rethink key issues in the interpretation of Chinese literary and visual culture.

Large surface computing devices (wall-mounted or tabletop) with touch interfaces and their application to collaborative data analysis, an increasingly important and prevalent activity, is the primary topic of this book. Our goals are to outline the fundamentals of surface computing (a still maturing technology), review relevant work on collaborative data analysis, describe frameworks for understanding collaborative processes, and provide a better understanding of the opportunities for research and development. We describe surfaces as display technologies with which people can interact directly, and emphasize how interaction design changes when designing for large surfaces. We review efforts to use large displays, surfaces or mixed display environments to enable collaborative analytic activity. Collaborative analysis is important in many domains, but to provide concrete examples and a specific focus, we frequently consider analysis work in the security domain, and in particular the challenges security personnel face in securing networks from attackers, and intelligence analysts encounter when analyzing intelligence data. Both of these activities are becoming increasingly collaborative endeavors, and there are huge opportunities for improving collaboration by leveraging surface computing. This work highlights for interaction designers and software developers the particular challenges and opportunities presented by interaction with surfaces. We have reviewed hundreds of recent research papers, and report on advancements in the fields of surface-enabled collaborative analytic work, interactive techniques for surface technologies, and useful theory that can provide direction to interaction design work. We also offer insight into issues that arise when developing applications for multi-touch surfaces derived from our own experiences creating collaborative applications. We present these insights at a level appropriate for all members of the software design and development team. The myriad ways Beijing residents understand and nurture the good life, drawing on cultural resources ranging from ancient metaphysics to modern media. Ten Thousand Things explores the many forms of life, or, in ancient Chinese parlance “the ten thousand things” that life is and is becoming, in contemporary Beijing and beyond. Coauthored by an American anthropologist and a Chinese philosopher, the book examines the myriad ways contemporary residents of Beijing understand and nurture the good life, practice the embodied arts of everyday well-being, and in doing so draw on cultural resources ranging from ancient metaphysics to modern media. Farquhar and Zhang show that there are many activities that nurture life: practicing meditative martial arts among friends in a public park; jogging, swimming, and walking backward; dancing, singing, and keeping pet birds; connoisseurship of tea, wine, and food; and spiritual disciplines ranging from meditation to learning a foreign language. As ancient life-nurturing texts teach, the cultural practices that produce particular forms of life are generative in ten thousand ways: they “give birth to life and transform the transformations.” This book attends to the patterns of city life, listens to homely advice on how to live, and interprets the great tradition of medicine and metaphysics. In the process, a manifold culture of the urban Chinese everyday emerges. The lives nurtured, gathered, and witnessed here are global and local, embodied and discursive, ecological and cosmic, civic and individual. The elements of any particular life—as long as it lasts, and with some skill and determination—can be gathered, centered, and harmonized with the way things spontaneously go. The aim of this book is to provide the scientific background to using the formation of chemical categories, or groups, of molecules to allow for read-across i.e. the prediction of toxicity from chemical structure. It covers the scientific basis for this approach to toxicity prediction including the methods to group compounds (structural analogues and / or similarity, mechanism of action) and the tools to achieve this. The approaches to perform read-across within a chemical category are also described. Chemical Toxicity Prediction provides concise practical guidance for those wishing to apply these methods (in risk / hazard assessment) and will be illustrated with case studies. This is the first book that addresses the concept of category formation and read-across for toxicity prediction specifically. This topic has really taken off in the past few years due to concerns over dealing with the REACH legislation and also due to the availability of the OECD (Q)SAR Toolbox. Much (lengthy and complex) guidance is available on category formation e.g. from the OECD and, to a lesser extent, the European Chemicals Agency but there is no one single source of information that covers all techniques in a concise user-friendly format.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Against the backdrop of the Western world s saturated and fatigued consumer goods markets, the evolving of China s new consumerism is probably among the most thrilling developments of our days. While the run of foreign companies for China is going on uninterruptedly and many are still struggling with rudimentary difficulties like distribution or production planning, the market is already entering the next stage of competition: the competition of brands. This thesis lays out how foreign (Western) consumer good brands need to be developed in the PR China to ensure long-term market success and a sustainable strong standing with the Chinese consumers. In a first step, this author shortly analyses the situation of existing Chinese and foreign brands in terms of overall market conditions, market trends, domestic or foreign brand dominance, and factors for success or failure. A second step specifies relevant urban Chinese consumer groups according to socio-demographic factors, the consumers general living conditions, lifestyles, and perspectives. A preface on the Chinese system of values delivers the background for further understanding of this paragraph. Subsequently, the core part of this thesis is concerned with brand positioning, branding and brand communication as integral elements of brand building. It introduces modern status-quo concepts from Western brand building practice for each element. With reference to the findings from the preceding brand and consumer analyses, this author discusses in detail how companies can implement and adapt these elements and concepts to the requirements of the Chinese context. Promising options as well as possible challenges and risks are pointed out accordingly. Relevant examples from the current brand scene in China, such as Wall s, Lenovo, BMW, Haier, or Samsung, illustrate these recommendations and suggest creative starting points for further exploration. Major findings of this thesis are that Western brands need to maintain strong symbolic values, and that comprehensive brand building based on brand substance and personality may be the key for sustainable success. Particular focus is to be on durable, close brand-consumer relationships. A main challenge for Western brands will be the adaptation of brand communication to the local consumer requirements.
