Haunted by representations of black women that resist the reality of the body's vulnerability, Kimberly Juanita Brown traces slavery's afterlife in black women's literary and visual cultural productions. Brown draws on black feminist theory, visual culture studies, literary criticism, and critical race theory to explore contemporary visual and literary representations of black women's bodies that embrace and foreground the body's vulnerability and slavery's inherent violence. She shows how writers such as Gayl Jones, Toni Morrison, Audre Lorde, and Jamaica Kincaid, along with visual artists Carrie Mae Weems and María Magdalena Campos-Pons, highlight the scarred and broken bodies of black women by repeating, passing down, and making visible the residues of slavery's existence and cruelty. Their work not only provides a corrective to those who refuse to acknowledge that vulnerability, but empowers black women to create their own subjectivities. In The Repeating Body, Brown returns black women to the center of discourses of slavery, thereby providing the means with which to more fully understand slavery's history and its penetrating reach into modern American life.
In the Fall of 1857, some 120 California-bound emigrants were killed in lonely Mountain Meadows in southern Utah; only eighteen young children were spared. The men on the ground after the bloody deed took an oath that they would never mention the event again, either in public or in private. The leaders of the Mormon church also counseled silence. The first report, soon after the massacre, described it as an Indian onslaught at which a few white men were present, only one of whom, John D. Lee, was actually named. With admirable scholarship, Mrs. Brooks has traced the background of conflict, analyzed the emotional climate at the time, pointed up the social and military organization in Utah, and revealed the forces which culminated in the great tragedy at Mountain Meadows. The result is a near-classic treatment which neither smears nor clears the participants as individuals. It portrays an atmosphere of war hysteria, whipped up by recitals of past persecutions and the vision of an approaching "army" coming to drive the Mormons from their homes.

In Performing Racial Uplift: E. Azalia Hackley and African American Activism in the Postbellum to Pre-Harlem Era, Juanita Karpf rediscovers the career of Black activist E. Azalia Hackley (1867–1922), a concert artist, nationally famous music teacher, and charismatic lecturer. Growing up in Black Detroit, she began touring as a pianist and soprano soloist while only in her teens. By the late 1910s, she had toured coast-to-coast, earning glowing reviews. Her concert repertoire consisted of an innovative blend of spirituals, popular ballads, virtuosic showstoppers, and classical pieces. She also taught music while on tour and visited several hundred Black schools, churches, and communities during her career. She traveled overseas and, in London and Paris, studied singing with William Shakespeare and Jean de Reszke—two of the classical music world’s most renowned teachers. Her acceptance into these famous studios confirmed her extraordinary musicianship, a “first” for an African American singer. She founded the Normal Vocal Institute in Chicago, the first music school founded by a Black performer to offer teacher training to aspiring African American musicians. Hackley’s activist philosophy was unique. Unlike most activists of her era, she did not align herself unequivocally with either Booker T. Washington or W. E. B. Du Bois. Instead, she created her own mediatory philosophical approach. To carry out her agenda, she harnessed such strategies as giving music lessons to large audiences and delivering lectures on the ecumenical religious movement known as New Thought. In this book, Karpf reclaims Hackley's legacy and details the talent, energy, determination, and unprecedented worldview she brought to the cause of racial uplift.

Filipino Americans, like other American populations, are not an absolute group that evolved in a vacuum. This book documents how they emerged and grew within the larger context of political forces, the prevailing social order, rights and responsibilities of individuals, economic well being, and the American Dream. In doing so, Filipino Americans became active participants in the American democracy, a crucial step because the 21st century will be defined not so much by the color line but by a more basic human relationship: the sustained commitment and shared sacrifice by adults for the well being of future generations.

The proof of any group's importance to history is in the detail, a fact made plain by this informative book's day-by-day documentation of the impact of African Americans on life in the United States. One of the easiest ways to grasp any aspect of history is to look at it as a continuum. African American History Day by Day: A Reference Guide to Events provides just such an opportunity. Organized in the form of a calendar, this book allows readers to see the dates of famous births, deaths, and events that have affected the lives of African Americans and, by extension, of America as a whole. Each day features an entry with information about an important event that occurred on that date. Background on the highlighted event is provided, along with a link to at least one primary source document and references to books and websites that can provide more information. While there are other calendars of African American history, this one is set apart by its level of academic detail. It is not only a calendar, but also an easy-to-use reference and learning tool.
With World War II only barely in the rear view mirror, New York apartments are scarcer than hen’s teeth. Janice Cameron has moved to the City to be a writer, trading Honolulu’s sun and flowers for Manhattan in the grip of icy winter. She’s imagined her own cunning little flat, a little table by the window, a little lace cloth...fat chance! Her own flat is completely out of the question, and in fact she’s going to have to share a boarding-house bedroom with a perfect stranger. At least the stranger is perfect: Lily Wu is beautiful, exquisitely dressed, and swathed in mystery. But Janice hasn’t even unpacked before a rather less exquisite mystery intrudes. True, the handyman wasn’t brilliant at maintaining the boiler, but murder seems a rather extreme response. In the best Golden Age tradition, the rooming house is crammed with intriguing suspects, from the tortured musician to the French emigree to the actress with a face for radio. Lily and Janice would much prefer to leave, but they’ve nowhere to go. Solving the murder seems the best possible option, especially since if someone were arrested and taken away...well, that would free up a room, now wouldn’t it?
A Legacy of Love is the story of a Southern Indiana farm family and the trials and tribulations of raising children during the Great Depression Era. This family, like most people during this era who lived in agricultural communities, did not have central heat, electricity nor indoor bathrooms. Most farm families raised (or made) most of their own food including chickens, eggs, butter, milk, beef, pork, and vegetables from their own gardens. They relied on each other, their extended families, neighbors, and their church community to survive. Ora and Ann Wolfe raised seven children who became productive adults, on 64 acres of land (of which 30 were not tillable) in a three room clapboard house. Supplemental income came from intermittent work in the coal mines by Ora and the selling of butter and eggs by Ann to stores in the city and to neighbors who did not have their own. They faced personal challenges with the loss of a young child to scarlet fever, years where farming efforts barely produced enough to feed them all and family members who left the nest to go off to war or to work in the factories, or elsewhere, to support the war effort. Every day was a challenge, but their belief that an all wise God ruled the affairs of mankind kept the family grounded in its Christian Faith. Church was the center for community and social life. Sunday services, church potluck dinners and singing in the churchs Glee Club were activities enjoyed by this family. The strict observance of the Sabbath was celebrated with a large dinner served around the noon hour that would be enjoyed by every family member and often, with friends of the family. A Legacy of Love will provide the reader with an understanding of life in America during difficult economic times - a time when many people lost hope and some left their homes and farms, never to return. Others gained strength though family, hard work and their churches. The average farm family had little or no money, but nearly everyone faced similar challenges. Adults and children alike learned ways to enjoy the simple things in life at practically no cost. These difficult times not only instilled a good work ethic in children but a strong commitment to each other. This commitment is the legacy of love that bound this family so tightly together with a rich family heritage. It is the fabric that builds strong communities.
This provocative look at the connections—and conflicts—between Latinos and African Americans in the United States assesses the challenges facing both groups as they strive to achieve the American dream. Latino and African American communities in the United States share neighborhoods, similar family values, and many of the same challenges faced by minorities, yet are often at odds about their distinctive cultures and position in society. This book looks at the social and political history of both groups, pointing out their differences and similarities, and exploring their perceived role in America's social strata. Author Karen Juanita Carrillo delves into the often-controversial issues that have undermined Afro-Latino race relations in this country, including how the war on poverty led to competition and animosity, how the legacy of slavery bears on their relationship, and how prejudices among new immigrants inflame existing tensions. The book features a multitude of views and perspectives on what it means to be American for Latino and African American populations. Its extensive discussion of immigrant groups includes those arriving from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras, Ecuador and Peru.

Gender, Ethnicity, and the State is a study of Latina and Latino prisoners in New York State. Through the use of two case studies, it compares the organizing strategies for reform pursued by Latina and Latino prisoners between 1970 and 1987, the support they received from non-Latina(o) prisoners and third parties, and the response of penal personnel to their calls for support. The work also contains information on Latino prisoner participation and community response to both the 1971 Attica Rebellion and the 1970 New York City jail rebellions. The data for this study was compiled through a combination of primary and secondary sources. Primary sources include in-depth interviews and oral histories conducted with Latina(o) and African-American ex-prisoners, prisoners' rights attorneys, community activists, and penal staff. Other primary sources include prisoner and mainstream English and Spanish language newspapers; prisoners' rights newsletters; court cases; and government and private organizational reports.

The elites saw the city's markets and streets as dirty, filled with dangerous non-white crowds. The poor saw these public places as sites of play and livelihood. De Barros shows how these opposing views set the stage for a series of petty disputes and large-scale riots. The "little traditions" of Georgetown's multi-racial and multi-ethnic urban poor helped create a creole view of public spaces, articulated in the course of struggle. By uncovering the popular cultural patterns that underlay much of this unrest, De Barros demonstrates both their place within a larger West Indian cultural paradigm and the emergence of a peculiarly Guianese ritual of protest.
Transnational Latina Narratives is the first critical study of its kind to examine twenty-first-century Latina narratives by female authors of diverse Latin American heritages based in the U.S. Heredia s comparative perspective on gender, race and migrations between Latin America and the U.S. demonstrates the changing national landscape that needs to accommodate an ever-growing Latino/a presence. This book draws on the work of Denise Chávez, Sandra Cisneros, Marta Moreno Vega, Angie Cruz, and Marie Arana, as well as a diverse blend of popular culture. Heredia s thought-provoking insights seek to empower the representation of women who are transnational ambassadors in modern trans-American literature.

Erik Saxton was a young black man living in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was well educated and well liked. Because of a mutual friend, Mr. Saxton offered to help her just like he did for some other individuals that he saw as being friends. One day Mr. Saxton turned up dead. He had been murdered in his home. Clara Blocker had called 911 and remained on the premises to watch the crime scene unfold. After a cursory investigation, Ms. Blocker became the prime suspect.
In this book, among other sources, we have compiled key thoughts and material that were dictated to Alice Bailey (starting in the 1920s and continuing through the 1960s) from the Tibetan master Djwhal Khul. As you see in the references, she wrote eighteen books, which were published by Lucis Publishing Company, New York. Djwhal Khul shared this material from another dimension, giving us a new perspective. We highly recommend these books because Djwhal Khul is in a higher vibrational dimension, working and aiding us in an enlightened evolution. What we have added to this book is some of our thoughts about the energies to which Khul refers. We know very little about these energies, and this material presents a challenge to us in our evolutionary sojourn. Each of us must pursue our understanding and knowledge about these energies. This is our goal and our reason for writing this book. Good travels to you.
It's the Age of a Child Who Grows To Manhood Quickly In His New Body Playground in My Mind is a bit of whimsy story about a boy who has the capability of aging quickly. The story begins with Michael appearing at the age of 5 years old to the artist, Taylor Bouchand who doesn't know what to make of him or what to do with him. When she asks the child where are his parents, he says, "No one is ready for me" and thus begins her association with this little boy, Michael who grows at an alarming speed through childhood. To add to the confusion, Taylor will find that what she thought she knew about her parents was not exactly true and this new knowledge goes a long way in explaining why Michael appeared to her.
From a lauded poet and playwright, a novel of a young woman's life with the Black Panthers in 1960s San Francisco At first glance, Geniece’s story sounds like that of a typical young woman: she goes to college, has romantic entanglements, builds meaningful friendships, and juggles her schedule with a part-time job. However, she does all of these things in 1960s San Francisco while becoming a militant member of the Black Panther movement. When Huey Newton is jailed in October 1967 and the Panthers explode nationwide, Geniece enters the organization’s dark and dangerous world of guns, FBI agents, freewheeling sex, police repression, and fatal shoot-outs—all while balancing her other life as a college student. A moving tale of one young woman’s life spinning out of the typical and into the extraordinary during one of the most politically and racially charged eras in America, Virgin Soul will resonate with readers of Monica Ali and Ntozake Shange.
Inside this book is a very powerful prayer to Saint Anthony that will shake your “hearts out.” Saint Anthony of Padua is also a matchmaker. For those of you who are looking for suitable partners, Saint Anthony is the way to go. Actually, this prayer was taught and given to me by my beloved mother who was a devoted Saint Anthony of Padua believer. Mom assured me that this prayer to Saint Anthony will always be heard by the Saint. It was in World War II in a jungle that two young newlyweds were hiding . They can see the marching boots of the Japanese soldiers. These soldiers held bayonets in their hands. Nearby the newlyweds was their friend who was bayoneted. It was at this time when the Japanese soldiers were approaching their exact location that the new husband saw a tall man with a brown Habit or clothing spread it out to hide these two newlyweds. Each time the Japanese soldiers will close in to these newlyweds’ hiding spot, this browned-clothed man with an almost-bald hair, very young and fair-skinned, will stand in front of them and spread his cloak or long robe around these blessed newlyweds to hide the two of them. The Japanese soldiers did not see the two newlyweds and had changed directions and went away. And these newly weds were safe. And the vision of Saint Anthony of Padua disappeared. These newlyweds were my future parents! And my beloved mother was a devotee of Saint Anthony of Padua! As a very young girl, my future mother was always wearing a brown Habit or Clothing just as Saint Anthony of Padua each time she went to church. And it was only my beloved father who saw the vision of Saint Anthony of Padua who saved them from being killed by the Japanese soldiers’ bayonets in that jungle hideaway in 1944. That hideaway jungle was now where our ancestral home was built and where we grew up. All these give me tears each time I recall these very holy and galactic events. And I, myself, have experienced so many miracles from Saint Anthony of Padua. This is precisely why this very precious book was written. My beloved parents have experienced the miraculous intervention of Saint Anthony during World War II when they were newly-married. And up to this day, Saint Anthony always runs to our rescue whenever we are looking for something. After I have said this powerful prayer to Saint Anthony, I have found this manuscript that I have been searching for. I said to Saint Anthony that if I found this very manuscript , that this was Creator Source and Saint Anthony’s sign that I will publish this miraculous book. And I have found this my manuscript that is in your hands right now!

This collection of interviews demonstrates that U.S. Latinas/os of South American background have contributed pioneering work to U.S. Latina/o literature and culture in the twenty-first century. In conversation with twelve significant authors of South American descent in the United States, Juanita Heredia reveals that, through their transnational experiences, they have developed multicultural identities throughout different regions and cities across the country. However, these authors' works also exemplify a return to their heritage in South America through memory and travel, often showing that they maintain strong cultural and literary ties across national borders. As such, they have created a new chapter in trans-American history by finding new ways of imagining South America from their formation and influences in the U.S.
