How would you like to sit on the floor with your grandmother and listen to her tell stories again? Old stories that she made up just for you? These are not great novels like Harry Potter or The Hobbit, these are small stories and poems, full of small memories and small adventures that were told with laughter and love. Many's Stories are just that, a grandmother's gift to her children, her grandchildren, and her great-children in hopes that they will never forget those special hours she shared with them so long ago.
This diverse collection of poems spans some seventy years. I have always written poetry, scribbling on whatever paper was on hand. Some of these early tomes have been lost; some of them should have been lost. For better or worse I have gathered old and new in this my last book Here in these poems, my life is exposed-- my memories and my words, my thoughts of joy and sadness, regrets and victories are all mixed up in time and places. Most memories have traveled with me through a happy childhood, a happy marriage, a happy motherhood. These reflections of quiet yesterdays, of hours just being still, of soaking up Paris for six Julys, of letting time run through me, of looking for moonlight on the Gulf looking for me. Such things have been my life, but for you, I hope you find treasures of laughter and love on every page.
On June 7, 1998, James Byrd, Jr., a forty-nine-year-old black man, was dragged to his death while chained to the back of a pickup truck driven by three young white men. It happened just outside of Jasper, a sleepy East Texas logging town that, within twenty-four hours of the discovery of the murder, would be inextricably linked in the nation’s imagination to an exceptionally brutal, modern-day lynching. In this superbly written examination of the murder and its aftermath, award-winning journalist Joyce King brings us on a journey that begins at the crime scene and extends into the minds of the young men who so casually ended a man’s life. She takes us inside the prison in which two of them met for the first time, and she shows how it played a major role in shaping their attitudes—racial and otherwise. The result is a deeply engrossing psychological portrait of the accused and a powerful indictment of the American prison system’s ability to reform criminals. Finally, King writes with candor and clarity about how the events of that fateful night have affected her—as a black woman, a native Texan, and a journalist given the agonizing assignment of covering the trials of all three defendants. More than a spectacular true-crime debut, Hate Crime is a breathtaking work of reportage and a searing look at how the question of race continues to shape life in America.
GROWING UP SOUTHERN: White Men I Met Along The Way is an ordinary journey of little Negro girl to woman of color in America. King uses her life, in vivid essays, as a microcosm, to share stories of white boys and men she encountered in racial episodes and everyday dramas that are familiar to readers on both sides of the racial aisle. GUS is King's acronym for book, which is full of experiences inspired by some of the men King met in Jasper, a part of East Texas that King had negative childhood memories of. King redefines her own life and does it with candor, humor, honesty and balance. GROWING UP SOUTHERN isn't about throwing the race card. Instead, it reshuffles an old, outdated deck.
