Adventure and excitement-this describes Andy Green. Building and sailing racing sailboats all over the world, designing and creating unique new structures from composites, building a business from scratch, meeting and working with some of the best-known people in the world-all these things describe the unique life of Andy Green. His motto is "Keep on keeping on," and this certainly fits him. His has been a very successful racing (sailboats) career, and an equally successful engineering career, having developed many revolutionary new concepts and products-like the Chaparral Race Car Chassis, walkway bridges up to ninety feet, two-hundred-foot telescoping tower, all-composite buildings for Apple, AT&T, and Underwriters Labs. There have been plenty of ups and downs along the way, including some tragedies; however, all these things have been overcome. His perseverance and determination helped; however, he says he has been guided and blessed by God throughout his life, and his wife and partner has also been an inspiration. "Joyce & Andy, I finished the book! It is a beautiful love story, a passion for life on the sea, for one another, your children, and most of all your belief in God. That is the only possible way to survive the loss of two children. It is an adventure story of two lives shared with family and many friends, and a love of boats that fly you to the stars and the moon and home again! I hear your's and Andy's laughter on the wind! You'll be riding it forever. Lots of love to you both and thank you for sharing your life with me." Susan Simmons "Ride the wind could be turned into a first-class movie script. It has it all -- a beautiful love story of two people who, despite multiple tragedies and setbacks, steadfastly pursue their dreams and end up still loving, still together and on top. It's hard to imagine a more exciting life than the one you and Andy have managed to live for 65 plus years. As a young girl you wished for adventure and excitement - well you got multiple doses in your marriage to Andy. And Andy, as talented as he was, was blessed to have a partner who could both cheer him on and rein him in when he veered off path. Your writing style was superb, and if I were awarding Pulitzers, Ride the Wind would be right in the chase." John B. McClane 91
Events which become historical, says Michael Kraus, do not live on because of their mere occurrence. They survive when writers re-create them and thus preserve for posterity their otherwise fleeting existence. Paul Revere's ride, for example, might well have vanished from the records had not Longfellow snatched it from approaching oblivion and given it a dramatic spot in American history. Now Revere rides on in spirited passages in our history books. In this way the recorder of events becomes almost as important as the events themselves. In other words, historiography-the study of historians and their particular contributions to the body of historical records-must not be ignored by those who seriously wish to understand the past. When the first edition of Michael Kraus's Writing of American History was published, a reviewer for the New York Herald Tribune wrote: "No serious study of our national origins and development can afford not to have such an aid as this at his elbow." The book quickly came to be regarded as one of the few truly standard general surveys of American historiography, invaluable as a reference book, as a textbook, and as a highly readable source of information for the interested general reader. This new edition with coauthor Davis D. Joyce confirms its position as the definitive work in the field.Concise yet comprehensive, here is an analysis of the writers and writings of American history from the Norse voyages to modern times. The book has its roots in Kraus's pioneering History of American History, published in 1937, a unique and successful attempt to cover in one volume the entire sweep of American historical activity. Kraus revised and updated the book in 1953, when it was published under the present title. Now, once again, the demand for its revision has been met.Davis D. Joyce, with the full cooperation and approval of Kraus, has thoroughly revised and brought up to date the text of the 1953 edition. The clarity and evenhandedness of Kraus's text has been carefully preserved. The last three chapters add entirely new material, surveying the massive and complex body of American historical writing since World War II: "Consensus: American Historical Writing in the 1950s," "Conflict: American Historical Writing in the 1960s," and "Complexity: American Historical Writing in the 1970s-and Beyond."Michael Kraus, Professor Emeritus at City College of New York, received the Ph.D. from Columbia University and in his long career established himself as one of America's foremost historiographers.Davis D.Joyce is Professor Emeritus of History, East Central University, Ada, Oklahoma, and is the author of HOWARD ZINN: A RADICAL AMERICAN VISION and ALTERNATIVE OKLAHOMA: CONTRARIAN VIEWS OF THE SOONER STATE. He teaches part-time at Rogers State University, Claremore, Oklahoma.
In this authoritative and immensely readable insider’s account, celebrated cookbook author and former chef Joyce Goldstein traces the development of California cuisine from its formative years in the 1970s to 2000, when farm-to-table, foraging, and fusion cooking had become part of the national vocabulary. Interviews with almost two hundred chefs, purveyors, artisans, winemakers, and food writers bring to life an approach to cooking grounded in passion, bold innovation, and a dedication to "flavor first." Goldstein explains how the counterculture movement in the West gave rise to a restaurant culture characterized by open kitchens, women in leadership positions, and a surprising number of chefs and artisanal food producers who lacked formal training. The new cuisine challenged the conventional kitchen hierarchy and French dominance in fine dining, leading to a more egalitarian and informal food scene. In weaving Goldstein’s views on California food culture with profiles of those who played a part in its development—from Alice Waters to Bill Niman to Wolfgang Puck—Inside the California Food Revolution demonstrates that, while fresh produce and locally sourced ingredients are iconic in California, what transforms these elements into a unique cuisine is a distinctly Western culture of openness, creativity, and collaboration. Engagingly written and full of captivating anecdotes, this book shows how the inspirations that emerged in California went on to transform the experience of eating throughout the United States and the world.
Established in 1831, Westbrook Seminary, as the school was originally known, may be the earliest coeducational boarding school in the country. Once noted as having been in three cities without moving, the institution began in a section of Westbrook that became Deering and was later annexed to Portland. Westbrook Seminary was founded by Universalists but open to all youth, whatever their creed or gender. Permitted to give college work in 1863, it provided laureate degrees to women for more than 50 years. In the 20th century, the institution moved from coeducational seminary to girls school, to junior college for women, to college, and finally it became part of the University of New England, all under the schools original charter. Westbrook College Campus tells the story of this institution through vintage images, some never published before, selected from the campus archives.

Shadow Echo Me The Life and Times of Thomas Wiggin, 16011666 The Making of American Values by Joyce Wiggin-Robbins Thomas Wiggin, captain and governor in Colonial New Hampshire, was an accumulation of moral values, religious principals, political and European conflicts, and all the desires typical for a man of his era. With a heritage as a son of the clergy, being well educated, with a history of advantageous networking, Thomas would become the example of the discipline and strength needed to establish a home in the New England wilderness of the seventeenth century. Turning his back to a cultured, established, and predictable life in England, he chose to bring a wife and carve a life out of the wilderness and bring up his children in a place of wide-open opportunity and freedoms. It was men like Thomas Wiggin who became the backbone of the future United States of America.

The third son of a farmer, born in the small town of Kooweerup in rural Victoria during the Second World War, author Daryl Joyce was a sensitive Australian boy who realized there was life beyond his parents farm. In Crossing Over, he narrates his story as he found his way in the world, navigating all of the challenges that came along. Joyce tells about his formative years in post-World War II Australia with his brothers on the farm. Struggling with his own abiding sexual dilemma in this parochial environment, he finally spreads his wings in the city of Melbourne before embarking on a life-changing journey by ship to swinging London. He and his English soul mate from the ship enter into Britains late 60s youth revival. In Crossing Over, Joyce shares how he ultimately had to choose between continuing his hedonistic lifestyle or starting a family with the girl he met on the ship crossing over. After nearly two decades, he returned to Sydney, a prodigal son of sorts, where he settled back into the Australian lifestyle, guiding his aging parents in their final days. Joyce tells a story not of merit or reward, but about departure, adventure, and homecoming.
