Joy Nason was born into an English working class family during World War Two and raised in the fundamentalist Christian cult of the Exclusive Brethren. Growing up in this strict and demanding world, her family migrated to Australia in the 1950s. In her early 20s, Joy made the courageous decision to flee her family, knowing that she would be cut off from that moment on. Slowly but surely Joy made her way in the world, with kind employers who encouraged her to gain skills, and friends who helped her with socialising, travel and a new-found enjoyment of life. Through many jobs and disappointing liaisons, to finally becoming a mother of a baby boy, Joy picks herself up after each failure and faces the world with determination and a positive attitude. Joy finally entered the world of education - denied her by her sect - and attained teaching degrees, through which she became Senior Head Teacher at New South Wales TAFE. With Joy and Sorrow, Joy made the decision to go public with her life and experiences, partly to give inspiration to others trapped in similar situations, but also to add to the body of evidence exposing the hypocrisy of the Exclusive Brethren. This secretive sect, now re-branded the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, will stop at nothing to maintain their Charitable status - and keep their tax-free millions.

Jamie Rasmussen's HOW JOYFUL PEOPLE THINK is an exegetical study on Philippians 4:8. If you enjoy exegesis-style books, then you will enjoy his book. Rasmussen takes each part of Philippians 4:8 and helps us understand it in context as well to understand each point individually. He uses this passage to illustrate that if we "think on these things," we will be a more joyful people. Since I study joy, I enjoyed Rasmussen's study. I'm not a big fan of exegetical studies, but HOW JOYFUL PEOPLE THINK was definitely worth reading (listening to: )).

Life is not about the destination but the journey. It is not about reaching certain milestones, but the pit stops and detours along the way. This is true not only for me but for us all. A pit stop is a place to rest, refuel and refresh. To maximize the life the Creator has given you, a pit stop every now and then is required. Sometimes a detour; an alternate route is necessary to get where you are going. Instead of complaining or asking, "Why me Lord?" enjoy the journey. Remember, it is not the "to" but the "of". To is a preposition meaning toward, near or in the direction of something, namely a destination or a goal. Of is a preposition with the core purpose of introducing a noun or noun phrase that provides more information about a preceding word or phrase. Each devotion in 50 Day Journey of Joy opens with a scripture containing a "joy" word or phrase. The scripture and the devotion to follow provide more information about the journey - the valley lows and mountain highs. As you read be encouraged knowing while weeping may endure for a night, joy will come in the morning. Every day will not be sunny but because the joy of the Lord is your strength you can count it all joy. Remember it is not the "to" but the "of" so rejoice all along the journey. Again, I say rejoice!
