The early nineteenth century witnessed the mass movement of people from Britain’s countryside into its burgeoning towns and cities; people came to the city in search of work. This prompted many dairy farmers to follow suit and move themselves, their family and their cows into the country’s growing metropolises, where they opened the first generation of city dairies. In the 1830s, transportation in Britain was revolutionized by the coming of the railways, enabling foodstuffs, including milk, to be transported in bulk from countryside to city. Large dairy companies took advantage of this opportunity, opening a new generation of retail dairies. The demand for milk was so great that some cities boasted a dairy at the end of every street. For the next hundred years the cowkeepers fought a rear-guard action against the mighty corporate dairies and their attempts to monopolize the liquid milk market. The cowkeepers continued to produce their own milk, selling it — ‘fresh from the cow’ — over the dairy counter and out on the milk round. These dairies were kept in the family, handed down through successive generations. Despite surviving two World Wars, the rapid technological, social and economic changes that followed, brought about the demise of the traditional cowkeeper. But the city dairy continued as a family business, working as part of a national distribution network, overseen by the Milk Marketing Board. Out on the round, the family dairyman was almost indistinguishable from the corporate milkman. The sixties and seventies saw the arrival of the Supermarket, a game-changer in retailing. To survive, the city dairy had to change once more. It expanded its offer and seamlessly joined the ranks of those other most British of institutions: the Corner Shop and the Convenience Store.

This chapter is entitled Feets, Do Your Duty. Among her five husbands was celebrity Kenny Jones, who was a guitar player on the Midwestern Hayride - a popular television show that was telecast nationally. She had watched Kenny on the show for years, never dreaming that one day she would meet him and even marry him. What a thrill that had to have been. Being married to Kenny threw her into the world of top name performers like Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Paycheck who would jam with Kenny at a club called Whiteys in Cincinnati. Betty also narrowly escaped being one of the Cincinnatis Stranglers victims as she encountered him one night after leaving the Playboy Club. Her encounter with him is chilling and will have readers on the edge of their seats. Readers will be memorized by her story. Should Hollywood ever get hold of it, the life and times of Betty Miller would make and excellent and very entertaining movie.

The book presents the development of the Construction Quality Assessment System (CONQUAS), Singapore’s de facto quality performance measurement system, explains the application of the Quality Management System (QMS) to manage CONQUAS and identifies 33 critical success factors (CSFs) for achieving high CONQUAS scores. Through CONQUAS, the reader benefits from understanding how the Singapore government developed and implemented the first objective system for measuring what many building professionals have perceived to be elusive quality standards in the construction industry. The book presents both the theoretical concepts as well as the practical aspects to achieving strategic Project Quality Management that is anchored on the CSFs to building best practices. To realistically reflect the practical aspects and challenging issues faced by stakeholders in the construction industry, questionnaire surveys were conducted with building professionals to distinguish the importance level and extent of adoption of the 33 CSFs (identified from a comprehensive review of the extant literature) in influencing and affecting the achievement of high CONQUAS scores. These were further anchored by in-depth interviews with quality experts in the Singapore construction industry to provide a better understanding of issues relating to strategic Project Quality Management. Collectively, the empirical findings collated from the building professionals suggest that while the CSFs identified are known tenets of quality, these were still not being followed in their totality. A further case study was conducted through a formal set of in-depth interviews with the quality assurance team of a construction company who has direct involvement before, during and after their tremendous improvements in the CONQUAS scores attained. The strength of this book therefore represents a true account and reflections of real-life practices and experiences in the construction industry for contractors, quality managers and policy-makers to learn from. Although the context of this book relates to the Singapore experience, the lessons and recommendations are equally relevant and applicable to the global construction industry in both the developing and developed countries whose stakeholders (in both the public and private sectors) wish to understand how CONQUAS works, and how the CSFs identified can likewise be implemented for strategic Project Quality Management to building best practices. The book is therefore of interests to researchers, academia and practitioners in the construction industry as well as in other sectors of the economy (in Singapore and other countries) where learning points may be used for enhancing project quality management for buildings.

Harry Assu, a chief of the Lekwiltok -- the southernmost tribe of the Kwagiulth Nation -- was born in 1905 in Cape Mudge, Quadra Island, British Columbia. His father was Billy Assu, one of the most renowned chiefs of the Northwest, who led his people from a traditional way of life into modern prosperity. As well as being a family chronicle, Harry Assu's recollections tell the little-known story of the Lekwiltok from legendary times to the present. Drawing on the oral traditions of his people, he narrates the story of the 'Great Flood' which gave sacred sanction to territories settled by them. Hand-drawn and historical maps illustrate his account of coastal alliances and raids by other tribes over the last two centuries and provide an understanding of the current land and sea claims of the Kwagiulth Nation. Supernatural beings inhabited the worlds of his ancestors and of Assu's boyhood, and he recalls encounters with birds and whales which held particular significance for his family. His description of a more recent experience -- his own potlatch in 1984 -- is perhaps the most complete record of a modern potlatch. As well, his account of the seizure of potlatch regalia in 1922, the jailing of the leaders and the subsequent restoration of these family treasures is a rare view from inside Indian culture. Harry Assu put his faith in education and welcomed the efforts of teachers sent by the Methodist Missionary Society. He remains an elder and supporter of the United Church at Cape Mudge. Symbolizing the achievement of his tribe in bringing into harmony a traditional culture with commercial fishing, in which he was involved for sixty years, Harry Assu reminisces about the old cannery days on the coast and tells of the continuing struggle by his people to maintain a place in the modern fishing industry. Assu of Cape Mudge is illustrated with drawings of supernatural events by artist and author Hilary Stewart which were drawn near Cape Mudge while Harry Assu described the dramatic occurrences. The Kwakwala words have been transcribed by Peter Wilson, with a full record of language association, meaning, and optional spellings. Also included in the book and of general interest are an appendix of ancient tales told by the Lekwiltok and a genealogical chart of the Assu family. This personal memoir by an important Native leader of British Columbia will delight anthropologists, historians, and all those with an interest in Native studies and autobiography.

This book has evolved by processes of selection and expansion from its predecessor, Practical Scanning Electron Microscopy (PSEM), published by Plenum Press in 1975. The interaction of the authors with students at the Short Course on Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microanalysis held annually at Lehigh University has helped greatly in developing this textbook. The material has been chosen to provide a student with a general introduction to the techniques of scanning electron microscopy and x-ray microanalysis suitable for application in such fields as biology, geology, solid state physics, and materials science. Following the format of PSEM, this book gives the student a basic knowledge of (1) the user-controlled functions of the electron optics of the scanning electron microscope and electron microprobe, (2) the characteristics of electron-beam-sample inter actions, (3) image formation and interpretation, (4) x-ray spectrometry, and (5) quantitative x-ray microanalysis. Each of these topics has been updated and in most cases expanded over the material presented in PSEM in order to give the reader sufficient coverage to understand these topics and apply the information in the laboratory. Throughout the text, we have attempted to emphasize practical aspects of the techniques, describing those instru ment parameters which the microscopist can and must manipulate to obtain optimum information from the specimen. Certain areas in particular have been expanded in response to their increasing importance in the SEM field. Thus energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry, which has undergone a tremendous surge in growth, is treated in substantial detail.
