Joshua Chamberlain has become a pop culture icon and his regiment is now the most famous small military unit in American history. A major focus of The Killer Angels, the largest selling Civil War novel of all time, save Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and two major motion pictures, “Gettysburg” and “Gods and Generals,” the story of the 20th Maine has become legendary, particularly their effort to defend the Union Army’s position on Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg. According to filmmaker Ken Burns, it was the story of Chamberlain as told in the novel The Killer Angels that inspired him to create his masterpiece, nine-part documentary film, “The Civil War.” In 1890s, at the encouragement of friends, Chamberlain wrote an autobiography covering his life from childhood to just before he joined the army in 1862. He stopped there, because by then he had written so many speeches and essays about his life in the army that there was no point in telling that part of his life story again. Assembled here, and annotated, are that original 1890s manuscript along with essays he wrote about the three most significant battles of his military experience—Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Petersburg—as well as the story of the surrender ceremony for the Confederate Army at Appomattox which he commanded.

This book is an investigative study of Christian and Islamic relations in the kingdom of Sicily during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. It has three objectives. First, it establishes how and why the Norman rulers of Sicily, all of whom were Christians, incorporated Muslim soldiers, farmers, scholars, and bureaucrats into the formation of their own royal identities and came to depend on their Muslim subjects to project and enforce their political power. Second, it examines how the Islamic influence within the Sicilian court drew little scrutiny, and even less criticism, from intellectuals in the wider world of Latin Christendom during the time period. Finally, it contextualizes and explains the eventual emergence of Christian popular violence against Muslims in Sicily in the latter half of the twelfth century and the evolution of a wider discourse of anti-Islamic sentiment throughout Western Europe.

The first and most obvious affliction is identity politics, which seeks to transform America by turning politics into a religious venue of sacrificial offering. For now, the sacrificial scapegoat is the white, heterosexual, man. After he is humiliated and purged, who will be the object of cathartic rage? White women? Black men? Identity politics is the anti-egalitarian spiritual eugenics of our age. It demands that pure and innocent groups ascend, and the stained transgressor groups be purged. The second affliction is that citizens oscillate back and forth, in bipolar fashion, at one moment feeling invincible on their social media platforms and, the next, feeling impotent to face the everyday problems of life without the guidance of experts and global managers. Third, Americans are afflicted by a disease that cannot quite be named, characterized by an addictive hope that they can find cheap shortcuts that bypass the difficult labors of everyday life. Instead of real friendship, we seek social media “friends.” Instead of meals at home, we order “fast food.” Instead of real shopping, we “shop” online. Instead of counting on our families and neighbors to address our problems, we look to the state to take care of us. In its many forms, this disease promises release from our labors, yet impoverishes us all. American Awakening chronicles all of these problems, yet gives us hope for the future.
