Country music maintains a special, decades-long relationship to American military life, but these ties didn't just happen. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are revolutionizing the world in a way their original developers never envisaged. Outstanding in appearance, discipline, and precision at drill, the Third Minnesota Volunteer Infantry was often mistaken for a regular army unit. Rebel Colonel Ponder described the regiment as “the hardest lot of men he’d ever run against.” Betrayed by its higher commanders, the Third Minnesota was surrendered to Nathan Bedford Forrest on July 13, 1862, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Through letters, personal accounts of the men, and other sources, author Joseph C. Fitzharris recounts how the Minnesotans, prisoners of war, broken in spirit and morale, went home and found redemption and renewed purpose fighting the Dakota Indians. They were then sent south to fight guerrillas along the Tennessee River. In the process, the regiment was forged anew as a superbly drilled and disciplined unit that participated in the siege of Vicksburg and in the Arkansas Expedition that took Little Rock. At Pine Bluff, Arkansas, sickness so reduced its numbers that the Third was twice unable to muster enough men to bury its own dead, but the men never wavered in battle. In both Tennessee and Arkansas, the Minnesotans actively supported the U.S. Colored Troops (USCT) and provided many officers for USCT units. The Hardest Lot of Men follows the Third through occupation to war’s end, when the returning men, deeming the citizens of St. Paul insufficiently appreciative, spurned a celebration in their honor. The political project of pragmatism has focused primarily on its defense of democracy as the best political system to maintain and improve human well-being over lifetimes and generations. Digital and social media are increasingly integrated into the dynamics of protest movements around the world. They strengthen the mobilization power of movements, extend movement networks, facilitate new modes of protest participation, and give rise to new protest formations. Meanwhile, conventional media remains an important arena where protesters and their targets contest for public support. This book examines the role of the media -- understood as an integrated system comprised of both conventional media institutions and digital media platforms -- in the formation and dynamics of the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong. For 79 days in 2014, Hong Kong became the focus of international attention due to a public demonstration for genuine democracy that would become known as the Umbrella Movement. During this time, twenty percent of the local population would join the demonstration, the most large-scale and sustained act of civil disobedience in Hong Kong's history -- and the largest public protest campaign in China since the 1989 student movement in Beijing. On the surface, this movement was not unlike other large-scale protest movements that have occurred around the world in recent years. However, it was distinct in how bottom-up processes evolved into a centrally organized, programmatic movement with concrete policy demands. In this book, Francis L. F. Lee and Joseph M. Chan connect the case of the Umbrella Movement to recent theorizations of new social movement formations. Here, Lee and Chan analyze how traditional mass media institutions and digital media combined with on-the-ground networks in such a way as to propel citizen participation and the evolution of the movement as a whole. The past twenty-five years have seen enormous changes in Native America. One of the most profound expressions of change has been within the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. The Nation has overcome significant hurdles to establish itself as a potent cultural and economic force highlighted by the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center and Foxwoods, the largest casino in the Western Hemisphere. In Casino and Museum, John J. Bodinger de Uriarte sees these two main commercial structures of the reservation as mutually supporting industries generating both material and symbolic capital. To some degree, both institutions offer Native representations yet create different strategies for attracting and engaging visitors. Where Away, first published in 1944, recounts the exploits of the Omaha class light-cruiser U.S.S. Marblehead in her service in the Pacific during World War Two. The Marblehead was in Borneo at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, and joined other ships of the Royal Netherlands and Royal Australian Navies in patrol duty and as escorts to merchant ships. On January 24, 1942, the Marblehead was attacked by Japanese bombers and hit by three bombs. Marblehead was severely damaged, on fire and had 15 dead and 84 seriously injured crewmen. However, the crew managed to extinguish the fires and get the damaged ship underway. She then began a journey of over 9000 miles westward to South Africa, the first port where repairs could be made. In April, the Marblehead set sail for the United States, arriving in New York on May 4, 1942. Following further repairs at the drydock of the Brooklyn Naval Yard, Marbleheadreturned to duty on October 15, 1942, and joined the South Atlantic Fleet where she served until February 1944. A short stint in the convoy lanes of the North Atlantic followed. Marblehead next sailed to the Mediterranean, reaching Palermo on July 29, 1944. She took part in Operation Dragoon, the invasion of southern France, and was used in bombardment of enemy shore positions, her final combat mission. Included are maps and numerous pen and ink drawings by John Floherty, Jr.
