A Short History of the Hungarian Communist Party

In spite of its small size, the Hungarian Communist party (HCP), founded in the fall of 1918, has played an important role both in Hungary's national history and in the international communist movement. Hungary, which was the only soviet republic other than the ephemeral Bavarian soviet republic to exist outside the USSR, lasted five months during the critical period of the Paris Peace Conference. The "veterans" of the Hungarian soviet republic, like Bela Kun, Georg Lukacs, and Eugen Varga, later held important posts in the Comintern and in the international Communist press. In the Stalinist era, the HCP distinguished itself by excessive zeal in the application of "integral Stalinism" in foreign policy (e.g., anti-Titoism), the economy, and political life (e.g., the Rajk and Kadar trials). However, the 1956 revolution was engineered by the revisionist communist intelligentsia and by such revisionist party leaders as Imre Nagy. Finally, in spite of its repressive role after the revolution, in the 1970s under Janos Kadar the HCP introduced a new system of "liberalism" and economic reform.

Scientists have speculated as to the nature of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) - "the third circulation" or "vital spirit" for centuries. Just what is this mysterious bathing solution of the central nervous system? Is it a vehicle of transport for an "animal spirit" directing all our activities, as thought by Galen (Singer, 1956) or but a "modified tap water" (Halliburton, 1917)? With the advent of lumbar puncture, cerebrospinal fluid has become a readily available and important means of studying disease affecting the nervous system. In recent years, many sophisticated tools including com puter guided gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and high performance liquid chromatography have made it possible to identify and quantify many constituents of this fluid. The CSF has an enormous, though largely "untapped", potential in aiding diagnosis and evaluating treatment of many neurological, psychiatric and systemic disorders. As the ependyma is only a diffusional barrier between the CSF and extracellular fluid of the brain for many compounds, changes in the concentration of these compounds in the CSF may reflect disease processes in the brain.

Atomic and Molecular Photoabsorption: Partial Cross Sections is a companion work to Joseph Berkowitz's earlier work, Atomic and Molecular Photoabsorption: Absolute Total Cross Sections, published with Academic Press in 2002. In this work Joseph Berkowitz selected the "best" absolute partial cross sections for the same species as included in the companion work. A contrast, however, is that photoabsorption measurements, being of order I/Io, do not require the most intense light sources, whereas acquiring data on the products of light interactions with gaseous matter (ions, electrons, various coincidence measurements) has benefited significantly with the arrival of second- and third-generation synchrotrons. The newer devices have also extended the energy range of the light sources to include the K-shells of the species discussed here. The newer light sources encouraged experimentalists to develop improved instrumentation. Thus, the determination of partial cross sections continues to be an active field, with more recent results in some cases superseding earlier ones. Where the accuracy of the absolute partial cross sections is deemed sufficient (less than five percent), numerical tables are included in this new work. In this book, the author Joseph G. Sinkovics liberally shares his views on the cancer cell which he has been observing in vivo and in vitro, over a life time. Readers will learn how, as an inherent faculty of the RNA/DNA complex, the primordial cell survival pathways are endogenously reactivated in an amplified or constitutive manner in the multicellular host, and are either masquerading as self-elements or as placentas, to which the multicellular host is evolutionarily trained to extend full support. The host obliges. The author explains that there is no such evidence that “malignantly transformed” human cells survive in nature. However, when cared for in the laboratory, these cells live and replicate as immortalized cultures. These cells retain their vitality upon storage in liquid nitrogen. One can only imagine an astrophysical environment in which such cells could survive; perhaps, first their seemingly humble exosomes would populate that environment. Immortal cell populations so created may survive as individuals, or may even re-organize themselves into multicellular colonies, as representatives of life for the duration of the Universe. This thought-provoking book is the work of a disciplined investigator and clinician with an impeccable reputation, and he enters a territory that very few if any before him have approached from the same angles. It will appeal to researchers with an interest in cell survival pathways and those researching cancer cells.
