Annotation Tells how Samuel Augustus Hayden, almost destroyed the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT). In the final decades of the nineteenth century, Hayden caused such unrest among Texas Baptists, that he was expelled from the state body. He created the Baptist Missionary Association (BMA), which continued to fight perceived oppression by the BGCT.
The Risāla of al-Shāfiʿī (d. 204/820), the earliest preserved work of Islamic legal theory, has been understood in previous scholarship as either the elaboration of a hierarchy of sources of law (Qurʾān, Sunna, consensus, and analogical reasoning) or an extended defense of the Sunna. After identifying early conflicts between churches and baseball in the late-nineteenth century, Price examines the appropriation of baseball by the House of David, an early twentieth-century millennial Protestant community in southern Michigan.
