Theologizing in Black is a creative and rigorous comparative study on black theological musings and liberative intellectual contemplations engaging the theological ethics and anthropology of both continental African theologians (Tanzania, Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo) and black theologians in the African Diaspora (Haiti, Trinidad, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, United States). Using the pluralist approach to religion promoted by the philosopher of religion and theologian John Hick, the book is also an attempt to bridge an important gap in the comparative study of religion, Africana Studies, and Liberation theology, both in Africa and its diaspora. The book provides an analytical framework and intellectual critique of white Christian theologians who deliberately disengage with and exclude black and Africana theologians in their theological writings and conversations. From this vantage point, Africana critical theology is said to be a theology of contestation as it seeks to deconstruct white supremacy in the theological enterprise. This book not only articulates a rhetoric of protest about the misrepresentation and underrepresentation of the humanity of African and black people in white theological imagination; it also enunciates a positive image of black humanity and congruently promulgates a constructive representation of blackness. The paramount goal of Africana theological anthropology and ethics is the preservation of life and promotion of human dignity and the sheer acknowledgement that the African people and people of African descent are bearers of the image of God.
A Theology of Power and Privilege makes the bold assumption that it is possible to develop an antiracist theology within a constructive evangelical theological method. It examines Black Liberation Theology’s claims of embedded racism within White theological systems and then asks both if Reformed North American Evangelicalism evidences racism within its theology, and if so, how might that be addressed biblically and doctrinally while remaining true to the theological essence of evangelicalism. Along the way, the author engages critically with an evangelical tradition represented by John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Hobbs, and Carl F. H. Henry and considers it in the light of the critique of James Cone. Having identified racism within the theological tradition the author then offers a constructive evangelical theology of power and privilege that he accesses as truly antiracist. In pursuit of this theological conclusion, the author explores biblical texts on liberation, subjection, and obedience and applies his conclusions to constructive work on the Doctrine of God. This is done within an evangelical hermeneutical methodology that privileges the biblical text. This book will be of interest to evangelicals who are engaged in debates around race, racism, and social justice either theologically or historically, and theologians generally interested in the application of hermeneutics to theological method. It will also be of interest to anyone regardless of tradition as a guide to how white theologians can take seriously the contributions and value of the Black intellectual tradition to their work.

A newly discovered, diverse sponge fauna of early Silurian age, is described from Gotland, Sweden. This is the first Silurian sponge assemblage known from Baltica, and the only diverse Llandoverian assemblage known worldwide. The fauna includes 20 genera and 29 species, of which three genera and six species are new. Eighteen species are new to Baltica. The fauna shows strong similarities to later Silurian assemblages in Arctic Canada, but one endemic species comprises ca. 50% of the fauna. The fauna shows that lithistid sponges recovered well from the late Ordovician extinction in some areas, and became widely spread in the early Silurian. In contrast, non-lithistid sponges like, such as hexactinellids, appear to have evolved rapidly during the Late Ordovician – early Silurian interval, and some modern groups probably originated in inshore habitats.
