Methodological naturalism is the thesis that only natural features can be factored into any legitimate explanation. Moreover, the thesis contends, any attempt to explain natural phenomena by appealing to supernatural features is unscientific and, therefore, illegitimate. This book argues that nothing inherently problematic afflicts possible appeals to supernatural agency in the attempt to explain select phenomena in nature. Reputable philosophers of the ancient and medieval periods, as well as prominent scientists of the early modern era, invoked supernatural agency in their attempts to understand nature. For them, miraculous interventions in nature by a supernatural agent were not unreasonable. However, the super-naturalistic worldview has been replaced by methodological naturalism. The assumptions of two pivotal figures--David Hume and Charles Darwin--brought about this change. This book shows that this change was motivated by unscientific means. Hence, the change itself remains inconsistent with the assumptions of methodological naturalism.
The flying public, airlines, and governments will all agree on one date that changed commercial flying: that was September 11, 2001. The first edition of Aviation Law: Cases, Laws and Related Sources, described early consequences of that event, particularly compensation of victims and early tightening of aviation security. Subsequently laws and regulations affecting all aspects of aviation changed so rapidly that it became difficult to set a cut-off date for the second edition. The rapid flow of events made an update urgent. Several gaps in the materials of the first edition became evident as the book was used. The authors filled those gaps, pruned old materials and added much new material describing not only the later developments, but also evolving economics and flight technology. The objective of the case book is to offer a basic handbook for air law practitioners providing them with a starting point for almost any subject they may encounter. For example, a lawyer specializing in liability law will quickly be able to find basic materials on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), air carrier licensing, FAA certification, and labor law. The book continues to present aviation law from the American point of view. Thus the book will be valuable for foreign air lawyers who are guiding foreign airlines in service to the very important North American pool of air traffic. The book also explains the international scene to American air lawyers so that they may guide their clients who provide foreign service. New chapters on liability for cargo damage and for ground damages have been added and new materials on the legal rights of lessors, successors, actual carriers and code-shares. A chapter on environmental regulation of aviation noise and emissions is also new. All the main subjects listed in the first edition are significantly updated. The three authors are veteran transportation lawyers and continue their activities in this field.

For him, science in a society requires confrontation, again and again, with issues of autonomy vs. legitimation as the central problem of democracy. This story line, which motivates much of our professional research, has helped us limit the material presented to a more humane and more realistic amount than is presented in many beginning university physics courses. The theme of atoms also supports the presentation of more non-Newtonian topics and ideas than is customary in the ?rst term of calculus-level physics. We think it is important and desirable to introduce students sooner than usual to some of the major ideas that shape contemporary physicists’ views of the nature and behavior of matter. Here in the second decade of the twenty-?rst century such a goal seems particularly appropriate. The quantum nature of atoms and light and the mysteries associated with quantum behavior clearly interest our students. By adding and - phasizing more modern content, we seek not only to present some of the physics that engages contemporary physicists but also to attract students to take more physics. Joseph M. Levine provides a witty and erudite account of one of the most celebrated chapters in English cultural history, the acrimonious quarrel between the "ancients" and the "moderns" which Jonathan Swift dubbed "the Battle of the Books." Until his death in 1944, Holloway attended almost every performance of the Abbey Theatre and daily recorded in his journal his reactions to plays and players and his comments about and conversations with literary and theatrical people. From the journal’s 221 bulky volumes, housed in the National Library of Ireland, Mr. Hogan and Mr. O’Neill have compiled this book of extracts from the approximately 25,000,000 words written by the Irishman. The years from 1899 to 1926 were chosen because they are generally considered to be the significant ones for the Abbey Theatre: the year of its founding to the production of Sean O’Casey’s The Plough and the Stars, which caused a riot in the theatre. Mr. Holloway attended every play during these years, as well as many rehearsals, and talked with nearly everybody who had anything to do with the theatre.
