This is a compilation of papers presented at the 6th International Conference on Asian and Pacific Coasts (APAC2011) held on December 14OCo16, 2011 in Hong Kong, China. It contains more than 200 articles addressing a wide spectrum of issues, ranging from conventional coastal engineering problems (such as wave hydrodynamics and sediment transport) to issues of contemporary interest (such as tsunami, coastal development, climate change and seawater level rise, shoreline protection, marine energy, nearshore ecology, oil spill, etc.). Authors present their experiences in tackling these problems, by means of theoretical modeling, numerical simulation, laboratory and field observations, with an aim to advance fundamental understanding of the controlling mechanisms, as well as to develop solutions for practical designs. This volume serves to promote technological progress and activities, technical knowledge transfer and cooperation on an international scale.
Note from the publisher: Now in its sixth edition, this bestselling reference focuses on the basic materials and methods used in building construction. Emphasizing common construction systems such as light wood frame, masonry bearing wall, steel frame, and reinforced concrete construction, the new edition includes new information on building materials properties; the latest on "pre-engineered" building components and sustainability issues; and reflects the latest building codes and standards. It also features an expanded series of case studies along with more axonometric detail drawings and revised photographs for a thoroughly illustrated approach.
From New Zion to Old Zion analyzes the migration of American Jews to Palestine between the two World Wars and explores the contribution of these settlers to the building of Palestine. American Aliyah (immigration to Palestine) began in the mid-nineteenth century fueled by the desire of American Jews to study Torah and by their wish to live and be buried in the Holy Land. His movement of people-men and women-increased between World War I and II, in direct contrast to European Jewry’s desire to immigrate to the United States. Why would American Jews want to leave America, and what characterized their resettlement? From New Zion to Old Zion analyzes the migration of American Jews to Palestine between the two world wars and explores the contribution of these settlers to the building of Palestine. From New Zion to Old Zion draws upon international archival correspondence, newspapers, maps, photographs, interviews, and fieldwork to provide students and scholars of immigration and settlement processes, the Yishuv (Jewish community in Palestine), and America-Holy Land studies a well-researched portrait of Aliyah.
The Proceedings of the International Materials Symposium on Ceramic Microstructures '86: Role of Interfaces presents a comprehensive coverage of the past decade's advances in ceramic science and technology related to microstructures. The term microstructure is used in the broad sense and is synonymous with char~cter. Character is defined as a complete detailed description of chemical and physical characteristics of a material. This symposium is the third in a series, held every ten years, on ceramic microstructures. The first symposium, in 1966, had as a subtitle "Their Analysis, Significance and Production" and emphasized the need and importance of characterization in order to fully understand the chemical and physical properties of materials. The second Symposium, in 1976, placed emphasis on the exploration of characters most suited and needed for "Energy-Related Applications." By the time of that conference, the sequence of processing--characterization--properties was fully accepted. It was recognized that characterization was the basis of materials science; the objective of processing was to produce a desired character that was considered necessary to realize a given property or behavior. To further emphasize the importance of character, the symposium dealt primarily with the property/character coupling.
This second edition of the standard reference in the field has been entirely rewritten and updated to reflect the latest methods for the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss, and the most recent practices in initiating a hearing conservation programme.;Maintaining and enhancing the comprehensive presentation of the first edition, Occupational Hearing Loss: explicates specific problems of occupational hearing loss and hearing conservation, and the principles of measuring hearing loss; shows how to establish damage risk criteria; summarizes the problems of hearing conservation in the diving industry; offers an expanded list of questions to be used when taking the histories of patients with otological complaints; explaines the audiogram and its interpretation, including information about masking, and updates computerized audiometry; supplies new information about brain stem evoked-response audiometry, acoustic emission testing and other special hearing tests; delineates the causes of conductive hearing loss and their management; and discusses legislative and compensatory aspects of hearing loss, and gives in-depth information about calculating hearing impairment.;With over 1000 literature citations, tables and figures, Occupational Hearing Loss should be of use to to occupational physicians, audiologists, health and safety engineers, industrial hygienists, otolaryngologists, residents, trial attorneys, judges, and upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in these disciplines.
Paper Chromatography and Electrophoresis, Volume II presents methods, techniques and complete experimental procedures in paper chromatography. The book provides information and applications of paper chromatography such as the theory, mechanism, and fundamentals of the process; the separation of amino acids, carbohydrates, lipophilic steroids, and related compounds; and the separation and estimation of inorganic ions by paper chromatography. Chemists and laboratory researchers and technicians will find the book a valuable reference material.
A practical guide to the professional and legal requirements for patient counseling, this book provides readers with the skills they need to be in compliance. The authors explore how a patient's attitude and behavior effect compliance, the pharmacist-patient relationship, and liability implications. They focus on the communication skills required to effectively counsel and provide realistic patient counseling scenarios that are easily adaptable to actual patient counseling situations. The book is meant to be used by any pharmacist practicing in any type of community pharmacy practice setting.
Here is the first comprehensive guide to the specification, installation, manufacture, and testing of glass units and windows for construction. Packed with data, descriptions, applications, and illustrations, the book examines all types of glass and insulating glass, including single and dual sealed systems, heat mirror materials, sealant compounds, and swiggle strip and metal edge compounds. You'll also find complete details on safety glass for hurricane-prone regions and for security purposesÑplus a glossary of terms and listings of trade organizations, suppliers, and manufacturers.
Fungi research and knowledge grew rapidly following recent advances in genetics and genomics. This book synthesizes new knowledge with existing information to stimulate new scientific questions and propel fungal scientists on to the next stages of research. This book is a comprehensive guide on fungi, environmental sensing, genetics, genomics, interactions with microbes, plants, insects, and humans, technological applications, and natural product development.
