Five star review As the world’s attention was focused on the massacre of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympic Games on September 6, 1972, the Fountain Valley Golf Course in the U.S. island of St. Croix hours later was invaded by five masked gunmen. Within minutes eight people including tourists and employees lay dead. It raced around the globe as a black-on-white massacre even though in St. Croix, where we locals refer to whites as Continentals and to blacks as Yankees, America’s skin color drama does not exist. Prior to the slayings, a Vietnam vet tried to kill two cops cuffing his fellow combat veteran who’d stolen money for heroin to which they both became hooked while in Vietnam. The shooter got away but the hunt for him was relentless. He sought refuge in my brother’s camp, where three other young men were visiting. With them he set off the Fountain Valley massacre, called “one of the most vicious crimes in the annals of Western civilization.” The four were clueless to the vet’s scheme to make the killing appear to be racially motivated. All five were captured, tortured, and sentenced to eight consecutive life terms. In 1984 the vet convict escaped by hijacking an airliner into Cuba where he remains today. In 1994 my brother Rafie was released based on his rehabilitation such as tutoring hundreds of prisoners to achieve their GEDs. Because the killings were publicized as a black-on-white crime, his freedom was bitterly protested and caused a Continental prosecutor to block Rafie’s admission to the University of California at Santa Cruz’ doctorate program. Besides, he was blackballed from paraprofessional work. So, Rafie committed suicide. “While a conventional page turner could’ve easily been written from this harrowing story, an erudite and poetic journey takes the reader into a larger context, embracing a scholarly overview of U.S. racism. Over the past decade, legal wagering has expanded rapidly in North America. In 1998 alone, people lost 50 billion dollars in legal betting and it is estimated that illegal wagering is twice that amount. A recent government report, based on the broadest population survey, concludes that the lifetime and pathological gamblers in the U.S. range between 4 and 10 million persons and is growing. If we include the families affected by problem gambling then the potential impact is indeed prodigious. Virtually no community in the U.S. and Canada is left untouched by entertainment or problem gambling. Treating problem gambling has evolved from a small group of practitioners in the 1980's working in specialty impatient units into an international enterprise that affects the caseload of many mental health professionals. Owing to its quiet origins, problem gambling treatment strategies are not well known throughout the clinical community. Consequently the average clinician is him/herself "learning as they go." This approach does not benefit either client or therapist. As the book's first chapter makes clear, problem gambling differs significantly from substance abuse, its nearest clinical relative. Art and the Artist in the Contemporary Israeli Novel presents studies of eight contemporary works of Israeli fiction by eight major Israeli novelists. It deals with a society where drama, lived in reality but also in the mind, is a central moving force. What this book shows is the ways these texts deal with the themes of creativity and the creation of a work of art and with the way art and artists are portrayed in a culture that is often perceived as being otherwise preoccupied. The book involves close and painstaking readings of these novels and travels along a broad spectrum of themes. It also shows how these texts engage in dialogue with texts of the Jewish tradition, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, with each other. Two major points of the book are its emphasis on the work as literary art and the way the same themes often find their way into the varied works created by this literary generation. The book notes two tendencies among Israeli writers: that there is a great “urge to tell” their story and the story of Israel; and that to make clear not only what is “happening” in these novels but also what is “going on” in their works of art, the novelist take the leisurely route of “literary emerging”— slowly but surely leading the reader to see how art emerges from the most prosaic of events. Despite its easygoing tone, the book still claims to be a serious book, dealing with serious issues, both ethical and metaphysical. One of the cases this book endeavors to make is that one of the main goals of contemporary Israeli writers is to insert their works of art—via a midrashic mode of writing in which previous texts are constantly being re-written and being made modern—as links in the great chain of the Jewish textual tradition. These novels often refer back to biblical tales and to rabbinic ways of reading them. But they also demonstrate how the writers themselves and their books and are also a part of that tradition. Most of all, however, these writers are supremely aware that they are artists and that they have a particular responsibility to their art.
