Authors have tried to strike a balance between a short book chapter and a very detailed book for subject experts. There were three prime reasons behind doing so: first, the field is quite interdisciplinary and requires simplified presentation for a person from non-parent discipline. Second reason for this short-version of a full book is that both the authors have seen students and technically oriented people, searching for this type of book on wind energy. Third reason and motivation was considering engineers who are starting their career in wind industry. This book is targeted to present a good starting background to such professionals.

Most of the major black literary and cultural movements of the twentieth century have been understood and interpreted as secular, secularizing and, at times, profane. In this book, Josef Sorett demonstrates that religion was actually a formidable force within these movements, animating and organizing African American literary visions throughout the years between the New Negro Renaissance of the 1920s and the Black Arts movement of the 1960s. Sorett unveils the contours of a literary history that remained preoccupied with religion even as it was typically understood by authors, readers, and critics alike to be modern and, therefore, secular. Spirit in the Dark offers an account of the ways in which religion, especially Afro-Protestantism, remained pivotal to the ideas and aspirations of African American literature across much of the twentieth century. From the dawn of the New Negro Renaissance until the ascendance of the Black Arts movement, black writers developed a spiritual grammar for discussing race and art by drawing on terms such as "church" and "spirit" that were part of the landscape and lexicon of American religious history. Sorett demonstrates that religion and spirituality have been key categories for identifying and interpreting what was (or was not) perceived to constitute or contribute to black literature and culture. By examining figures and movements that have typically been cast as "secular," he offers theoretical insights that trouble the boundaries of what counts as "sacred" in scholarship on African American religion and culture. At all times physicians were bound to pursue not only medical tasks, but to reflect also on the many anthropological and metaphysical aspects of their discipline, such as on the nature of life and death, of health and sickness, and above all on the vital ethical dimensions of their practice. For centuries, almost for two millennia, how ever, those who practiced medicine lived in a relatively clearly defined ethical and implicitly philosophical or religious 'world-order' within which they could safely turn to medical practice, knowing right from wrong, or at least being told what to do and what not to do. Today, however, the situation has radically changed, mainly due to three quite different reasons: First and most obviously, physicians today are faced with a tremendous development of new possibilities and techniques which allow previously unheard of medical interventions (such as cloning, cryo-conservation, ge netic interference, etc. ) which call out for ethical reflection and wise judgment but regarding which there is no legal and medical ethical tradition. Traditional medical education did not prepare physicians for coping with this new brave world of mod em medicine. Secondly, there are the deep philosophical crises and the philosophical diseases of medicine mentioned in the preface that lead to a break-down of firm and formative legal and ethical norms for medical actions.

The present essay is an attempt to apply the German sociologist Niklas Luhmann's "Social Systems" theory to translation. Luhmann's book unfolds a theoretical view of human society as a closed system. In trying to apply it to translation as a practical communicative complexity, especially from the perspective of a functional model as e.g. the "skopos" theory, certain features discussed in Luhmann will prove to be helpful for a better understanding of the concept of translation, others must be reinterpreted for the present purpose. The "fragments" now published follow Luhmann's considerations as closely as possible, but refrain from drawing detailed parallels to "translation" as a complex system. Prof. Dr. Hans J. Vermeer taught Portuguese and translation theory at the universities of Mainz and Heidelberg. Retired since 1992, he nonetheless continued to accompany the development of translation theories and to teach in various universities abroad. His work comprises (mostly unpublished) lectures and contributions to conferences and publications on Translation Studies, medieval German specialized literature and South Asian languages.

Seven Letters to Melin is an exploration of man’s alienation from nature—and from himself—in the modern technological age. Conceived as a series of letters to Melin, an engineer who believes in the value of science and technical progress, the book grows skeptical of such endeavors, while also examining mankind’s search for meaning in life. To help uncover this meaning, Šafařík posits a dichotomy between spectator and participant. The role of participant is played by Robert, an artist who has committed suicide. The spectator, embodied by the scientist Melin, views the world from a distance and searches for explanations, while the artist-participant creates the world through his own active engagement. Through these exchanges, Šafařík argues for the primacy of artistic creativity over scientific explanation, of truth over accuracy, of internal moral agency over an externally imposed social morality, and of personal religious belief over organized church-going. Šafařík is neither anti-scientific nor anti-rational; however, he argues that science has limited power, and he rejects the idea of science that denies meaning and value to what cannot be measured or calculated. Šafařík’s critiques of technology, the wage economy, and increased professionalization make him an important precursor to the philosophy of deep ecology. This book was also a major influence on the Czech president Václav Havel; in this new translation it will find a fresh cohort of readers interested in what makes us human.

Weltweit wird die Nutzung von Erdgas als Primärenergieträger noch über Jahrzehnte unverzichtbar bleiben. Dies gilt sowohl für Industrie- und Schwellenländer als auch für Entwicklungsländer. Bedingt durch die geringen Verunreinigungen gilt Erdgas unter den fossilen Brennstoffen als ein klimaschonender, da CO2-Emissionen armer, aber auch als ein bezahlbarer Energieträger. Um den Transport über weite Strecken wie auch über Ozeane zu ermöglichen - und damit eine wirtschaftliche und politische Alternative zu Pipelines zu erzeugen - wird das Gas unter erheblicher Volumenreduktion verflüssigt und mit Schiffen transportiert. An den Export- und Importhäfen sind Flüssiggastanks zur temporären Lagerung und zur weiteren Nutzung erforderlich. Die Tendenz zu kleineren Verflüssigungs- bzw. Verdampfungsanlagen mit den zugehörigen Lagertanks für die Nutzung als Schiffstreibstoff hat neue Marktteilnehmer hervorgebracht, die oftmals noch nicht über die erforderliche Erfahrung und technische Kompetenz verfügen. Der Verweis auf alle vorhandenen Normen reicht nicht aus, um widerspruchsfreie und dem Stand der Technik entsprechende Vorgaben und Anforderungen zu definieren. Durch die Umstellung auf europäische Normung wurden die Überarbeitung und Anpassung der vorhandenen nationalen Normen auf einen europäischen Standard unumgänglich. Komitees und Normenausschüsse auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene haben die Arbeit aufgenommen, um die Normenreihe EN 14620 zu aktualisieren und zu ergänzen. Aber auch in den USA werden die entsprechenden Vorschriften aktualisiert. Die Überarbeitung der 2011 erstmals erschienenen amerikanischen Vorschrift des American Concrete Institute ACI 376 "Requirements for Design and Construction of Concrete Structures for the Containment of Refrigerated Liquefied Gases" wird im Frühjahr 2019 abgeschlossen und die Vorschrift mit detaillierten Angaben zu Planung und Ausführung im Herbst veröffentlicht. Das vorliegende Buch gibt einen Überblick über den Stand der Technik hinsichtlich Planung und Ausführung von Flüssigerdgastanks (LNG-Tanks). Da die Thematik sehr umfangreich und vielschichtig ist, wird hier eine Einführung in die einzelnen Bereiche gegeben, wie zum Beispiel Anforderungen und Auslegung im Betriebszustand, thermische Auslegung, Flüssigkeits- und Gasdruckprüfung, Untersuchung des Baugrunds und zulässige Setzungen, Berechnung und Modellierung der Betonstruktur sowie die besonderen Einwirkungen aus Feuer, Explosion und Impact.
