This monograph is based on the authors’ extensive experience in the areas of clinical endocrinology and diagnostic imaging, their clinical and research work and insight gained from teaching medical students and doctors in the Czech Republic and abroad. The chapters contain embryological and anatomical notes, clinical characteristics of individual endocrinopathies, laboratory and function tests, including reference values, indications and algorithms of imaging methods and principles of rational modern therapy of individual pathologies, including further clinical monitoring of patients. Texts also give practical advice regarding how to approach patients with endocrine gland diseases, point out some potential misinterpretations of examination results and are supplemented with numerous images of pathological states, which are almost exclusively sourced from the authors’ private archives. The chapter on diabetes mellitus centres on the complications of diagnosing diabetes and on the mutual relation between diabetes and other endocrinopathies. Focusing primarily on clinical practice, the work does not elaborate on pathophysiology, but covers only the most recent pertinent literature from the discipline. What makes this comprehensible publication exceptional is the fact that it not only presents the clinical view of the endocrinologist on the various covered subjects, but the reader is also given the opportunity to learn about current diagnostic trends using imaging methods. This interdisciplinary view offers the reader a comprehensive insight into the field and the necessary knowledge for their clinical practice. This monograph is intended for medical students, junior endocrinologists, diabetologists, radiologists and general practitioners interested in endocrinology, however, it can be useful also for doctors preparing for medical postgraduate certification in endocrinology and imaging methods as it undoubtedly provides valuable information.

The Prague Uprising of 1848 was part of the powerful series of revolutions that shook practically the entire European Continent as the middle classes and urban and rural workers pressed against the rule of aristocrats and monarchs. Czech Marxist historian Josef Polisensky analyzes the general turmoil of revolutionary thought and action in Europe and then focuses on the specific case of the Prague Uprising. By using previously untouched sources—the records of hundreds of noble houses that came under the control of the Czech Archival Administration after World War II—Polisensky is able to show how those of the old social establishment fought the participants in the Uprising and temporarily restored the rule of the aristocracy. With an excellent sense for the dramatic and a thorough knowledge of place, Polisensky tells us who fought and died on the streets of Prague. With the conceptual framework of class conflict and a broad perspective on European events, he proposes reasons for the failure of the Prague Uprising in contrast to other successful revolutions. Aristocrats and the Crowd is the last of Polisensky's trilogy of studies on Czech society and revolution. In The Thirty Years' War and the European Crisis of the Seventeenth Century and Napoleon and the Heart of Europe, Polisensky explored the effects of other European conflicts on Czech society. Aristocrats and the Crowd describes, in his words, "the revolutionary springtime which eventually arrived, full of twists, in Bohemia itself.

Since the publication of the still very valuable Biblioteca histórica de la filología by Cipriano Muñoz y Manzano, conde de la Viñaza (Madrid, 1893), our knowledge of the history of the study of the Spanish language has grown considerably, and most manuscript and secondary sources had never been tapped before Hans-Josef Niederehe of the University of Trier courageously undertook the task to bring together any available bibliographical information together with much more recent research findings, scattered in libraries, journals and other places. The resulting Bibliografía cronológica de la lingüística, la gramática y la lexicografía del español: Desde los principios hasta el año 1600 (BICRES) began appearing in 1994. BICRES I covered the period from the early beginnings to 1600), followed by BICRES II (1601–1700), BICRES III (1701–1800), and together with Miguel Ángel Esparza Torres of Madrid there followed BICRES IV (1801 to 1860). Now, the fifth volume, has become available, covering the years from 1861 to 1899. Access to the bibliographical information of altogether 5,272 titles is facilitated by several detailed indexes, such as a short title index, a listing of printers, publishers and places of production, and an author index. More than twenty years of research in the major libraries of Spain and other European countries have gone into this unique work — relative sources of the Americas have also been covered — making it exhaustive source for any serious scholar of any possible aspect of the Spanish language.
