The year is 1928. May Skinner Bell has serious problems. She feels deeply the evil of the Alabama plantation where she, her husband and sons have fallen to. The family is very poor although May's enchanted beauty and education keep them separate from the nearby town. May was raised in Indian Territory by French nuns. Her friend and tutor was an old ex-slave and soldier. This gives May two natures. The result is a troubled young woman given to frightening rages and eccentric visions. Surrounding her is the plantation community of black workers, in desperate circumstances, and the Klan. The Klan never forgets that May's grandfather served as a Union soldier. Those whites around never forget that he was murdered by them on his return. From Murder to murder, violence to violence, May must cope with fear, ignorance and hate. Voodoo gives her Mojo, a gift which helps her survive and stay faithful to her family.

Randal Peyton Purcell can't guess what's coming when his doorbell rings one quiet Sunday in New York. Johann is not only beyond description, his incessant barking destroys the peace and harmony of Randy's home. From there on, he stumbles through the wreckage into the secrets of elderly Nazis and to murder most foul. In this satiric novel, Randy's descent through the rings of hell brings him into the clutches of a nymphomaniac Korean Princess, to being kidnapped by a psychopathic teenage robber who endlessly haunts the Interstate but cannot drive. Finally, a Jew from Brooklyn who is convinced he's black, catches him up. Randy must survive a nightmarish theme park, a cataclysmic gun battle and an apocalyptic inferno before he can make a frantic dash to freedom through the Okefeenokee swamp. Irreverent, humorous and sarcastic, I Dog forces Randy to change his inner vision. He must shed his snakeskin of privilege and haughtiness before he can find a humble salvation. I DOG is comic on virtually everything. While It may offend, it is with good humor. On its serious side, I DOG gives numerous considerations on our communal 'how' and 'why' – and particularly mocks our belief that we are good enough to be made in God's likeness. I DOG says not so, but rather that we come in the image of our canine brethren. We jump through hoops and wear circus ruffs. One way or another all of us are dogs. I DOG. Magda Ott is a laundress. She manages the second Avenue Laundry on Manhattan's Lower East Side. It is 1977, the lowest ebb of the Lower East Side. From the Laundry to the East river, five long New York blocks, there are now no more than a dozen tenements that are not partially or entirely burned out. This is a dead zone where dealers and whores do their business. Abandoned buildings, cars and people mix. Each day Magda walks to and from work through this dangerous blight. Her own building at the far end of the area is half charred. The difference is that there she has her young son, a treasure among the ruins. The Lower East Side is peopled by the eccentric, the good and the evil. They who converge on the Second Avenue Laundry their bags in tow clamoring for Magda to make them clean. When she came here years ago she'd been on heavy drugs. For her boy she's gone clean of that. Instead she's turned to hash and acid. These days it's pot only. In her druggy time she'd had the tattoos inked in. L . O . V . E . in large letters spread across her knuckles, both hands. Standing at the laundry counter in her tough slut way, customers ask 'what are the periods for.' She says, ' Those aren't periods, honey, they're bullet holes. Better stand back. I'm armed response.' Magda is from Kansas. She's a Mennonite. The dead from home keep her company in this lonely city. For more companionship she picks three or so customers at the laundry to write notes to. She sends these to them folded up in their laundry bags. True, this hasn't worked well so far. Currently she's got three new people to try. Homer Russell, Izzy Thorn and Samson O'Flaherty. She doesn't know it, yet, but they are going to work far too well. Big trouble--terrifying and murderous--is coming for Magda. It has her name on it. To survive she'll be needing her knuckles and L . Posie Victoria Vandermark charges forth from her mansion in Possum Trot, her new Jaguar racing her into lost corners of high prairie that surround the forlorn little town. She is wild as the prairie wind, spoiled, and eccentric. Her one stubborn determination is to become a ballerina, although her size and awkwardness make this more than doubtful. To force things her way Posie hires an ageing Italian ballet dancer whose career is over and who sees that the rich Posie could be his retirement pension. This is his plot forward. Coaxing Posie's delusion on is her nemesis, the cruel Aunt Bertha Flatbottom. She in turn falls madly in love with the 'Dancing Master.' Along the way Posie's quest for dancing recruit others. In fact Aunt Bertha schemes to produce a public recital for Posie that should surely make her utterly ridiculous and an object of scorn Meanwhile Posie is running amok through Possum Trot in her increasingly ragged tutu and slippers, giving performances to the Church, the Gas Station and the pool hall. Her recital is as expected the most unusual ever held. And following it is a cataclysmic dance of Posie's own across the vast and empty Prairie. The African American experience in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley from the antebellum period through Reconstruction This book examines the complexities of life for African Americans in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley from the antebellum period through Reconstruction. Although the Valley was a site of fierce conflicts during the Civil War and its military activity has been extensively studied, scholars have largely ignored the Black experience in the region until now. Correcting previous assumptions that slavery was not important to the Valley, and that enslaved people were treated better there than in other parts of the South, Jonathan Noyalas demonstrates the strong hold of slavery in the region. He explains that during the war, enslaved and free African Americans navigated a borderland that changed hands frequently—where it was possible to be in Union territory one day, Confederate territory the next, and no-man’s land another. He shows that the region’s enslaved population resisted slavery and supported the Union war effort by serving as scouts, spies, and laborers, or by fleeing to enlist in regiments of the United States Colored Troops. Noyalas draws on untapped primary resources, including thousands of records from the Freedmen’s Bureau and contemporary newspapers, to continue the story and reveal the challenges African Americans faced from former Confederates after the war. He traces their actions, which were shaped uniquely by the volatility of the struggle in this region, to ensure that the war’s emancipationist legacy would survive.
