This monograph re-evaluates the literary development of 2 Kings 9–10 within the context of the Deuteronomistic History. This undertaking opens with a thorough text and literary critical examination of the pericope, arriving at the conclusion that the narrative of 2 Kings 9–10 represents neither an insertion into the Deuteronomistic corpus, nor an independent literary tradition. Rather, when considering the Greek textual traditions of the biblical narrative (most especially B and Ant.), one can appreciate the narrative of Jehu’s revolution within the literary context of an extensive politically motivated narrative about the Israelite monarchy covering the period from the reigns of Jeroboam I to Jeroboam II. The identification of this pro-Jehuide source within the book of Kings enables a reliable dating into the 8th century BCE for much of the material in Kings focusing on the Northern Kingdom. Comparing this biblical narrative to other (mostly Mesopotamian and Syrian) texts relevant to Israelite history of the period advances the discourse about the veracity of the biblical narrative when contrasted with extrabiblical traditions and permits the plausible reconstruction of Israelite history spanning the 8th and 9th centuries BCE.

We investigate the existence of a middle-income trap using finite state Markov chains, constant growth thresholds, and mean passage times. As well as studying output per head, we examine the dynamics of its proximate determinants: TFP, the capital-output ratio, and human capital. We find upwards mobility for the capital-output ratio and human capital, but not for relative TFP. The lack of upwards mobility in relative TFP, at least from an intermediate level, suggests that escaping the middle-income category can take many years, and such traps may become increasingly apparent in the years to come.

Hasbara (explaining), the Israeli variant of public diplomacy, is the subject of endless domestic debate. Israel in the 1960s and 1970s saw many changes in its political and military international stage. This was a period of unusually intensive attention to the problems of hasbara, beginning with the appointment of Yisrael Galili as minister with responsibility for government communications and ending with the dismantling of the Ministry of Information in 1974, less than a year after it had been created. Israel had only been able to “muddle through,” and, at the end, there was no greater sophistication in Israeli thinking and no stronger administrative structure in spite of many organizational changes. Accessible to anyone interested in the history of Israel as well as political history and diplomacy, the book serves as a case study of how entrenched political culture can limit policy options and casts light on the emergence of public diplomacy as a feature of foreign policy.

This book is the first comprehensive, multinational overview of military affairs during the early Cold War, beginning with conflicts during World War II in Warsaw, Athens, and Saigon and ending with the Cuban Missile Crisis. A major theme of this account is the relationship between government policy and military preparedness and strategy. Author Jonathan M. House tells of generals engaging in policy confrontations with their governments’ political leaders—among them Anthony Eden, Nikita Khrushchev, and John F. Kennedy—many of whom made military decisions that hamstrung their own political goals. In the pressure-cooker atmosphere of atomic preparedness, politicians as well as soldiers seemed instinctively to prefer military solutions to political problems. And national security policies had military implications that took on a life of their own. Homer's Odyssey plays a unique methodological and structural role in The Cantos. Partly inspired by Joyce's use of different literary styles or “technics” in Ulysses, and partly inspired by medieval classicism and 19th century philology, Pound uses a plethora of methods to translate Homer and other classical texts. This book argues that The Cantos is a modernist vision of the Matter of Troy, a term used by medieval authors to designate the cycle of texts based on the Trojan war and its aftereffects, including the nostoi (returns) of the Greek heroes. This is the first study to explore how medieval classicism and translation informs Pound's mythical method and to systematically outline the variety and evolution of Pound's Odyssey translations in The Cantos.
