Historically, angels have been viewed as either disconnected objects of speculative investigation, or as mystifying beings mysteriously influencing our lives. However, this is not how the Bible describes them. Scripture, in sober and straightforward terms, simply describes what angels do. It is a practical depiction, a pastoral presentation. We see messages of encouragement, revelation, and guidance; we see judgment and correction; we see strengthening; we see journeying; we see prayer and worship. The biblical focus concerning angels is on ministry to the people of God. Angels are one way that God intervenes in human affairs in response to pastoral concerns or problems. Created to minister, angels are best understood, not using speculative or detached theology, but through applied and pastoral lenses. Using only Scripture and a classic model of pastoral theology as the framework, this book shows practically how angels are employed by God to bless His church and people as His servant ministers who glorify Him alone.

Yosef tells what it was like to be notified that, as an elderly widower, he must go to Jerusalem where he may be selected to marry a young temple virgin. Not thrilled when chosen, but being unwilling to gainsay YahwehaEUR(tm)s will, he takes her home. He recounts how he felt when he discovered her pregnancy, his disbelief of how she became pregnant, his fear that if he divorces her, she may be stoned, and his acceptance of the LordaEUR(tm)s will. They travel to Bethlehem. Yosef recounts the birth, the appearance of the shepherds, the Magi, and his reaction to learning that they must flee HerodaEUR(tm)s murder of the firstborn males. He recounts the trip to Egypt, their stay there, and the return home. He recounts his JesusaEUR(tm)s youth from the circumcision, through the presentation in the temple, to Jesus being missing and the desperate search for him before finding him teaching the temple priests, to his leaving for the wilderness. He accompanies Jesus on his ministries and learns of his miracles. Too old and infirm to travel, Jesus comforts Yosef on his deathbed. The holy family celebrates seder before YosefaEUR(tm)s peaceful death. Jonathan P. Tomes is a retired army lieutenant colonel who served in the Infantry in Vietnam, in Military Intelligence in Germany, and as a Judge Advocate GeneralaEUR(tm)s Corps officer, including serving as a military judge. A theology aims to explicate the nature of God. A metatheology investigates more fundamental issues concerning how to structure such an intellectual endeavour, and where it should begin. Approaches that ignore this more fundamental investigation risk presupposing stances that do not withstand scrutiny, and perhaps would never have been endorsed if considered directly. Approaches that ignore the issue of fundamentality can also switch from one set of assumptions to another without noticing the change in perspective that results, giving rise to a chance of incoherence and an approach that is theoretically disorderly. This book begins with the more basic question of where to begin thinking about God and where it is best to start the project of theology. It does so in a way that offers some hope of a defensible metatheory from which a complete theology, displaying the kind of theoretical elegance and structure we find in our best scientific and philosophical theories, can be developed.
