In the last half-century, high-speed water transportation has developed rapidly. Novel high-performance marine vehicles, such as the air cushion vehicle (ACV), surface effect ship (SES), high-speed monohull craft (MHC), catamaran (CAT), hydrofoil craft (HYC), wave-piercing craft (WPC) and small water area twin hull craft (SWATH) have all developed as concepts, achieving varying degrees of commercial and military success. Prototype ACV and SES have achieved speeds of 100 knots in at calm con- tions; however, the normal cruising speed for commercial operations has remained around 35–50 knots. This is partly due to increased drag in an average coastal s- way where such craft operate services and partly due to limitations of the propulsion systems for such craft. Water jets and water propellers face limitations due to c- itation at high speed, for example. SWATH are designed for reduced motions in a seaway, but the hull form is not a low drag form suitable for high-speed operation. So that seems to lead to a problem – maintain water contact and either water propulsion systems run out of power or craft motions and speed loss are a problem in higher seastates. The only way to higher speed would appear to be to disconnect completely from the water surface. You, the reader, might respond with a question about racing hydroplanes, which manage speeds of above 200 kph. Yes, true, but the power-to-weight ratio is extremely high on such racing machines and not economic if translated into a useful commercial vessel.

Differential equations with impulses arise as models of many evolving processes that are subject to abrupt changes, such as shocks, harvesting, and natural disasters. These phenomena involve short-term perturbations from continuous and smooth dynamics, whose duration is negligible in comparison with the duration of an entire evolution. In models involving such perturbations, it is natural to assume these perturbations act instantaneously or in the form of impulses. As a consequence, impulsive differential equations have been developed in modeling impulsive problems in physics, population dynamics, ecology, biotechnology, industrial robotics, pharmacokinetics, optimal control, and so forth. There are also many different studies in biology and medicine for which impulsive differential equations provide good models. During the last 10 years, the authors have been responsible for extensive contributions to the literature on impulsive differential inclusions via fixed point methods. This book is motivated by that research as the authors endeavor to bring under one cover much of those results along with results by other researchers either affecting or affected by the authors' work. The questions of existence and stability of solutions for different classes of initial value problems for impulsive differential equations and inclusions with fixed and variable moments are considered in detail. Attention is also given to boundary value problems. In addition, since differential equations can be viewed as special cases of differential inclusions, significant attention is also given to relative questions concerning differential equations. This monograph addresses a variety of side issues that arise from its simpler beginnings as well.

This book attempts to present some of the more recent developments from a cross-section of views on boundary value problems for functional differential equations.Contributions represent not only a flavor of classical results involving, for example, linear methods and oscillation-nonoscillation techiques, but also modern nonlinear methods for problems involving stability and control as well as cone theoretic, degree theoretic, and topological transversality strategies. A balance with applications is provided through a number of papers dealing with a pendulum with dry friction, heat conduction in a thin stretched resistance wire, problems involving singularities, impulsive systems, traveling waves, climate modeling, and economic control.With the importance of boundary value problems for functional differential equations in applications, it is not surprising that as new applications arise, modifications are required for even the definitions of the basic equations. This is the case for some of the papers contributed by the Perm seminar participants. Also, some contributions are devoted to delay Fredholm integral equations, while a few papers deal with what might be termed as boundary value problems for delay-difference equations.

Comprising of two hundred intricately hand-drawn illustrated pages of Irish traditions, crafts, history, emigration, countryside, farming ways, wildlife, myths and customs it is all sewn together in a case-bound hardback A3 size cover. A self-taught historian and artist, his prefaces are written by some heavy-hitting academics and historians. For forty years Johnny collected Irish folklore by pen and tape recorder. He details stories and events then sketches all the salient points with a fine nib so that readers of any age can easily visualize the topics. ‘In The Ould Ago’ has been selected to be displayed in top North American university libraries including Harvard, Notre Dame, Library of Congress in Washington, UCLA, Boston College and New York Public Libraries. Johnny's illustrated and written collection is now in the Fermanagh museum while his recorded material is being digitised by the UCD Folklore Department for the National Irish Archive. This special coffee table publication won a Judges Special Award in the International Rubery Book Awards and an Honorable Mention in the History section of the San Francisco Book Festivals Awards. Sadly Johnny passed away on the 1st of December 2010, just 5 weeks after his book was published. Seeing 40 years of collecting and sketching published in ‘In The Ould Ago’ gave him tremendous happiness. FolkloreBook.com gives a sense of the author and his work.
