In this readable, informative, and fascinating guide to the elements are entries on each of the 100-odd chemical elements, arranged alphabetically from actinium to zirconium. Each entry comprises an explanation of where the element's name comes from, followed by Body element (the role it plays in living things), Element of history (how and when it was discovered), Economic element (what it is used for), Environmental element (where it occurs, how much), Chemical element (facts, figures, and narrative), and Element of surprise (an amazing, little-known fact). Since publication of the first edition there have been a number of developments. Three new chemical elements have been named and validated: darmstadtium, roetgenium, and copernicium and the section on 'transfermium elements' has now been incorporated into the main part of the book. Economic uses of elements have grown, and some quite rare elements such as Scandium are now economically important, along with updates to elements such as gold due to new roles in industry. Fully revised and updated for 2010, this browsable compendium holds a wealth of useful information.

This article reviews progress made in the design and development of recombinant poxviral-based vaccines that express transgenes for tumor-associated antigens (TAAs) and human T-cell co-stimulatory molecules (designated TRICOM). The TRICOM vaccine platform consists of priming with a recombinant vaccinia (rV-) vector and multiple boosts with a replication defective fowlpox (rF-) vector. The rV, rF-PSA-TRICOM (PROSTVAC) has demonstrated survival benefit in randomized trials. rV, rF-CEA-MUC1-TRICOM (PANVAC) has demonstrated evidence of benefit in patients with colorectal, breast and ovarian cancers. Preclinical studies with TRICOM-based vaccines have demonstrated their ability to be used in combination with anti-CTLA4 monoclonal antibody, radiation, chemotherapeutics, and small molecule targeted therapies to enhance vaccine-mediated immune responses and antitumor activity. Randomized clinical studies have been completed, are ongoing, and are planned employing several of these TRICOM vaccine combination therapies. The importance of trial design in terms of patient population and clinical trial endpoint has been demonstrated in these studies.

This book reports on the latest developments in the field of Superfluidity. The phenomenon has had a tremendous impact on the fundamental sciences as well as a host of technologies. It began with the discovery of superconductivity in mercury in 1911, which was ultimately described theoretically by the theory of Bardeen Cooper and Schriever (BCS) in 1957. The analogous phenomena, superfluidity, was discovered in helium in 1938 and tentatively explained shortly thereafter as arising from a Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) by London. But the importance of superfluidity, and the range of systems in which it occurs, has grown enormously. In addition to metals and the helium liquids the phenomena has now been observed for photons in cavities, excitons in semiconductors, magnons in certain materials, and cold gasses trapped in high vacuum. It very likely exist for neutrons in a neutron star and, possibly, in a conjectured quark state at their center. Even the Universe itself can be regarded as being in a kind of superfluid state. All these topics are discussed by experts in the respective subfields.
