This is an examination of the evolution of the soapstone industry in Kenya from pre-colonial through colonial and into independence period. It scrutinizes forces that have shaped the industry and the impact have had on the people of Gusii, the place soapstone is found. It raises key questions and challenges regarding the future of the industry.
This work brings new perspectives on colonial rule in Gusii. The first British attempt to enter Gusii was a major clash, a bloodbath. using techniques honed over many years, Gusii warriors repulsed (if only for a while) the better-armed King's African Rifles soldiers who beat a retreat and to regroup prior to making the final push into Gusii.
